Jun 20265/5Went solo and ended up spending nearly 4 hours here, just wandering around. The Pompeii stuff is INSANE – like, you see those mosaics in textbooks but here they’re right in front of you. I got a bit lost (the signs could be clearer tbh) but the staff was suuuper helpful and pointed me to the Secret Room (don’t skip it if ur into quirky history). Some rooms were a bit chilly, so bring a sweater if you get cold easily. I’d say it’s a must if you care even a little about ancient stuff.Jun 20264/5Visited w/ my partner on a rainy Tuesday – perfect museum day! The Roman statues are HEFTY (seriously, how did they move these things??). Some of the signage is only in Italian though, so we used Google lens for quick translations. Loved the jewelry exhibits. Only minus: the café was packed and a bit pricey. But all in all, pretty epic.Jun 20265/5Just WOW. Came here after doing Pompeii and this really tied everything together for me. The mosaics are literally breathtaking up close. Bring comfy shoes – my feet were DONE by the end. Also, you can’t take pics in some sections (the erotic art), so heads up. Staff was super friendly and patient even though my Italian is non-existent.Jun 20265/5My family (2 teens + us) did the guided tour. Our guide, Paolo, was hilarious and clearly loves his job. Learned so much about daily life in Pompeii and saw some wild medical tools. Kids were fascinated by the 'for adults only' section lol. A bit crowded in the afternoons, so go early if you can!Jun 20265/5I’m a history nerd so this place is basically heaven. The Pompeii room is my fave – the details on those wall paintings are unreal. Didn’t love the lighting in some galleries, kinda hard to see the smaller stuff. Still, 10/10 visit.
The Farnese obsession
Alessandro Farnese was an interesting individual. Apart from being the pope of the Catholic Church, he had an obsession with collecting artifacts. Over time, his collection grew into one of the most valuable in Europe. This 2-hour private tour begins at the imposing entrance. You can directly skip the wait and your guide will meet you and reveal the historical relevance centered around the Farnese collection. Among the many masterpieces, you will come across the Farnese Bull - the largest sculpture recovered from the antiquity period. You will witness the masculine might of the Farnese Hercules who once greeted visitors at the Baths of Caracalla in 216 AD. Gaze upon mighty Atlas carrying the world depicted in the Farnese Atlas. Admire the beautiful frescoes and mosaics, including the scene of a triumphant Alexander the Great against the Persians at the Battle of Gaugamela.
The secret is revealed
Prepare yourself for what is to come. Your guide will take you to the Secret Room where you will be able to feast your eyes on over 250 sexually-themed objects excavated from Pompeii and Herculaneum. This collection was viewed as too scandalous for the eyes of the public and was only reserved for “mature gentlemen with good moral standing”.
Your tour ends at the magnificent Great Hall of the Sundial - named after the sundial embedded in the floor. Look to the ceiling and stare at one of the greatest ceiling paintings in Europe, depicting the symbolic crowning of King Ferdinand IV and his wife, Queen Maria Carolina.
