The guide spotted us from a distance and made sure we found the right spot. The ride was great! The narrow roads made the climb a bit nerve-wracking. We made our way up, had a little time to catch our breath, and then headed back down. We had plenty of time for that. It was a hot day, but we got cold drinks at the top. The ride back down left right on time, and when we arrived, we had the option to get off at the train station, which made things much easier for us.

Great view. You can see the entire gulf. The volcano is huge. However, visitors should be informed about the schedule. When you get off the bus, you’re told you have a little over two hours. But there’s no indication of how far you have to walk or how long that takes at a moderate pace. You walk up as fast as you can, spend 10 minutes at the top, and head back down so you don’t miss the bus. Because you definitely don’t want that. Once you’re back down, you realize you could have stayed up there 20 minutes longer. So, it’s just under 300 meters of elevation gain; at a moderate pace, it takes about 45 minutes to climb up. Going down is faster—about 35 minutes, without dawdling. You can then figure out how long you can stay up there. But—regardless—it’s a great experience. Definitely worth doing.

Lovely trip after our visit to Pompeii. The shuttle service was easy to find. The staff were friendly. We had two hours and forthy minutes there, rather than the stated hour and a half (which was too long for us in the 30+ degree heat). Recommend bringing plenty to drink or cash for drinks whilst there as not all card machines worked.
