Escape into A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Shakespeare's farcical romantic comedy hits West End's Bridge Theatre once more.
Great for
Fans of Shakespeare adaptations | Lovers of romantic comedies
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare's most intricate plays, featuring four distinct subplots that open and close at a wedding. The playwright centers his work on the absurdity of love, as he does with several of his plays. Yet, this particular one blends fantasy with puns, farce, slapstick, and layers of witty dialogue to create one of the most complex yet sophisticated works in Shakespeare's catalog.
The wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta fast approaches. A merry band of amateur actors clash as they prepare a play for the occasion, making the woodlands their homebase for rehearsals. Theseus finds himself embroiled in someone else's domestic affairs when Egeus, angered at his daughter's love for Lysander, issues an ultimatum: marry Demetrius or face death. When the lovers elope instead, Demetrius gives chase, with his secret admirer Helena by his side, hoping she can win him over. As all lovers and enemies converge in the forest, they unwittingly fall prey to the domestic affairs of yet another duo: the Fairy King and Queen.
