The Play That Goes Wrong is absolute chaos — and that’s what makes it brilliant. Watching a group of actors desperately trying to keep a collapsing murder mystery alive is both hilarious and strangely impressive. Every door that refuses to open, every line forgotten, every ‘dead body’ that won’t stay still turns disaster into art. By the time the corpse stood up and accused the detective, I wasn’t watching a play anymore — I was watching reality fall apart in the funniest way possible.

how chaotic it was. I mean I laughed for 2 hours straight. I'm an international student at The University of Surrey in my first year. So leaving home and being alone is something new. So I wanted to plan a one day solo trip to London. I am a musical theatre kid but for some reason this play spoke to me. And it made me laugh so much and feel so good that it got my mind of the being alone in a new place. I 100% recommend it and will come back for the Christmas one!

The play that goes wrong was superbly executed. The physicality of the humour was positively exhausting!!! The Duchess theatre was easy to locate and the matinee crowd were enthusiastic. I appreciated the early time slot as the crowds became three fold in the district for evening performances

    The story

There’s been a murder at a country estate, and Inspector Carter is on the case. But with the Cornley Drama Society in charge, solving the crime is the least of their worries. Props malfunction, doors won’t open, actors miss cues, and one even gets stuck in a grandfather clock. The cast desperately tries to hold the show together through all the chaos, resulting in relentless, side-splitting comedy. Will they make it to the curtain call? Probably. Will anything else survive?

This was a unique experience and immensely funny. The running jokes such as the 'you can tell I'm dead by my crossed arms' were done well. If you're someone who has ever done anything behind the stage, the show becomes even more amusing with things breaking and forgetting lines. The audience rarely stopped laughing, and the younger children especially enjoyed the fast pacing and pratfalls. That's high praise when you consider the screen time that rivals their attention. The set is as much a part of the cast as the actors. The intimate setting of the theater does as much to include the audience in the show as the actors do. The actors are each playing dual roles as the community theater actor and then the part in the show. Many actor stereotypes were referred to such as the one who blindly repeats the line he is given when it's requested or the arrogant one who lectures the audience on proper theater etiquette (Look up fourth wall during the interval. Idiots!) The actor playing Cecil as slightly empty headed and feeling the warmth of getting his first laugh was especially delightful. The final coup de grace was the climax of the play within the play that tied other moments together beautifully and had the audience applauding the unexpected hero. Truly unique, and I'd happily do it again!
