Grab a free audio guide at the palace shop before you start exploring.

Need a lift? There's a staff-operated one on the first floor of the main building for visitors with mobility issues.

Want to save some cash and enjoy a quiet meal? Bring your own food and water. The on-site cafes might be limited on vegetarian options.

If you don't mind crowds, visit during the summer for jousting, flower shows, and music festivals.

Palace parking is limited, so consider parking at Hampton Court train station or booking a spot nearby in advance.

For a more immersive experience, book a private guided tour.

Leave the Tudor costumes at home! Palace staff wear them so you may be denied entry or asked to change as you might cause confusion.

Did you know?

This place is where the drama of Henry VIII's six wives unfolded. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were both arrested here – and Jane Seymour sadly passed away, giving birth to the future King Edward VI.

Shakespeare and his crew performed Hamlet and Macbeth for King James I right here in 1603.

Hampton Court Palace holds the unique distinction of being the birthplace of the Church of England. This occurred when Henry VIII bravely broke from the Roman Catholic church after the Pope declined to annul his marriage with Catherine of Aragon, enabling him to marry Anne Boleyn.

The only one of Henry’s queens to have a funeral, Jane Seymour’s lungs and heart are stored in a lead box behind the altar at the chapel at Hampton Court Palace.

The gardens and the palace have been the backdrop for countless movies and TV shows, including 'Bridgerton', 'Queen Charlotte', 'Sherlock Holmes', 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Mamma Mia', 'The Theory of Everything', and 'Three Men in a Boat'.

Why visit Hampton Court Palace?

Rich in Tudor history

Although the Tudor dynasty only lasted 118 years, it is nonetheless important. You'll walk in the footsteps of Henry VIII and his six wives. Hampton Court, after all, is where Henry wooed and courted Anne Boleyn and where Catherine Howard was accused of adultery & placed under house arrest.

Baroque opulence

After Henry's reign, Hampton Court was rebuilt during the Glorious Revolution of 1688 by Willian III and Mary II, who wanted their own slice of French palace life. Think Versailles meets English style. The result? A stunning Baroque masterpiece with beautiful ceilings, built by Sir Christopher Wren.

Chapel Royal

Chapel Royal is so stunning; it could rival the likes of St Paul's Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. It has been used for worship for nearly 500 years, although Queen Anne refurbished it in the 1700s. The ceiling? A masterpiece of blue and gold, painted by Sir James Thornhill. The intricate oak detailing was carved by Grinling Gibbons.

One of its kind

The Hampton Court Palace is also home to The Maze, Britain’s oldest surviving hedge maze; the Great Vine, the largest grapevine in the world; the Chocolate Kitchen, the only surviving royal chocolate kitchen; the oldest Tudor kitchens; and the first-ever tennis courts. It’s also one of the two palaces where Henry VIII ever lived.

Tower of London: Booking was very easy. I received a WhatsApp message with the tickets, and that was it. Super easy. There was no line on site, even though it was the Easter break. We spent a lot of time at the Tower of London because we listened to the audio tour. You can download it to your phone using a QR code. The code is right at the entrance, next to the maps. Don’t forget your headphones. During the day, the line for the Crown Jewels was about 30 minutes long. By evening, there was no one there anymore.

Well set out experience and easy to get around with the audio. The history through story telling was a fun way to learn. The red coats were invaluable in helping me to find my way and to answer any questions that I had.

No problem with the tickets for the Tower of London, but the booking confirmation says "multilingual audio guides"—don't count on it! It's currently just an app available on iPhone and only in English... We had to pay an extra 14 pounds for the audio guides.

The Tower of London is very impressive to look at and larger than I expected. Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to take pictures of the Crown Jewels. It would have been nice if they sold photos of them.
