Two couples face a ticking clock, a desperate bargain, and the discovery that being human is more complicated - and beautiful - than they imagined.
Great for
Opera lovers | Romance & drama | Fans of classics
Once dismissed as a composition without a soul, Richard Staruss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten (Woman without a shadow) is now considered a pioneering force in opera. Its five lead roles are among the most challenging in the repertoire, requiring both power and fragility delivered by Elza van den Heever, Lise Lindstrom, and Nina Stemme. The Met's production features an acclaimed creative team that transforms the stage into a luminescent world between fantasy and reality. A spell-binding musical score, complex narration, and the overwhelming exploration of human dignity warrant thunderous applause at every performance. Experience this career-defining spectacle conducted by The Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning musical director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
The Story
When the Emperor of the Seven Seas marries a woman from the spirit world, her inability to bear children threatens his life to the brink of collapse. The divine Empress exists in a realm of perfect beauty but lacks the ability to cast a shadow. Her quest to gain this power leads her into the messy, imperfect world of mortals, into the humble dwelling of a dyer and his wife. What unfolds is a masterful interweaving of two marriages: one celestial but incomplete, the other earthly but authentic. Through their trials, Strauss and his librettist Hofmannsthal create an earnest reflection on what it means to be fully human.
