The name says it all. Beautifully loopy, this is the story of a black, queer, struggling artist who is trying to write a musical about a black, queer, struggling artist who is trying to write a musical… Join Usher in his journey of self discovery where he learns to love and loathe and believe and doubt all in the form of, of course, song and dance.
This Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is every bit true to its title. Usher is a young artist who is queer and also black. The complexity of identity gets to him and the dilemma of figuring out who he really is, is brilliantly displayed in the form of his thoughts as songs in this musical. As a black man, he expected to have certain desires and instincts and as a queer man, society has already decided who Usher should be. However, when these two different identities are combined, we get a young man who is torn between what the people think and his intrusive thoughts.
In order to make sense of all of this, Usher decides to write a musical about a young artist who is also black, and queer, and is writing a musical exactly like himself. He hopes that he will be able to give proper meaning to the word “identity” but in the end, he is left with one last question, perhaps the biggest of them all, “Is identity just an illusion?”

It was great having the playwright there. But there's no reason why it was sone as a reading. Seated actors is not so fun. That means understudies we're also under rehearsed. If there were none, why not say so? Then get more strict about your safety rules. Lovely to have Michael but He could have sat while the actors fully expressed. Even in a reading, the stage shouldn't be messy. The truth is I could not hear many of the words spoken by most of the actors. Two were perfectly clear, at times three. So I missed the performance and the e words though I love that is was historical. When there's an energy like that, please take the time to EXPLAIN IT. Get everyone on board. Say why. And ask the stand ins to please please be clear and slow down so we can get everything. Thanks and best of luck.Greer
