About Barcelona Zoo

The Spanish metropolis of Barcelona is a cultural mecca with world-class museums, breathtaking buildings, and picture-perfect beaches. Among the gems, the Barcelona Zoo is one of the city's most beloved attractions, drawing in both visitors and residents. Whether you're an animal enthusiast or just looking for a family-friendly day trip, the Barcelona Zoo is sure to satisfy your needs. This article will focus on the most important features of the zoo that visitors should not miss.

Did you know?

Among its diverse attractions, Barcelona Zoo boasts a primate house, terrarium, and a captivating "Land of Dragons" featuring Komodo dragons and five other exotic species from the Asia Pacific. The zoo's modern recreations of their natural habitats provide visitors with an immersive experience. Additionally, the zoo offers dolphin shows at its Aquarama.

In a terrifying incident on December 8, 2014, a 45-year-old man was rescued from a lion enclosure at Barcelona Zoo after being seriously mauled by three lions. Witnesses reported seeing him jump into the enclosure, resulting in injuries from bites and scratches. Fortunately, he was rescued and eventually recovered.

Barcelona Zoo made headlines in December 2020 when four of its lions tested positive for COVID-19, marking one of the few instances of large felines contracting the virus. The zoo's staff, familiar with the animals' routines, conducted PCR tests on them, and provided veterinary care akin to treating a mild flu. The lions responded well to the treatment and close monitoring.

Why visit Barcelona Zoo?

Walk with dinosaurs

Forget the fictional "Jurassic Park" with its scary T-Rexes. Barcelona Zoo focuses on prehistoric giants you can actually get close to. Their impressive collection of reptiles and amphibians, including the Komodo dragon and the giant tortoise, will have you feeling like you've stepped into a real-life prehistoric world.

Animal encounters, not just sightings

Unlike zoos with animals behind bars, Barcelona Zoo prioritizes natural habitats. Explore lush rainforests teeming with monkeys, or observe majestic lions roaming spacious enclosures. You'll feel like you're on a real safari, getting closer to the animals than ever before (safely, of course!).

Understanding conservation

This isn't just about cool animal selfies. Barcelona Zoo is a champion for endangered species. Witness their dedication firsthand through interactive exhibits and educational talks. You'll leave feeling empowered to make a difference for the creatures you encounter.

Behind-the-scenes tour

The Barcelona Zoo offers a variety of unique experiences that you won't find at other zoos. For example, you can take a behind-the-scenes tour to learn more about the care of the animals, or you can even have breakfast with the gorillas!

Snowflake's legacy

Barcelona Zoo gained international recognition as the home of Snowflake, the world's only known albino gorilla. Captured in 1966, Snowflake lived at the zoo until his passing in 2003, having been rescued by a farmer who had unfortunately killed the rest of his gorilla group.

The bus tour was an incredible experience—you literally get to see all of Barcelona. I recommend studying the map beforehand and getting off at the stops that interest you most. If you download the City Tour app, you can see where the bus is coming from so you don’t end up waiting in vain at the stop. I also recommend the 48-hour tour—there are so many beautiful places. We spent two hours just at the MNAC, and we only managed to see half of it, and then we continued with the tour. Excellent app, and I recommend getting tickets in advance—not for the tour, since there’s always availability, but the other sites sell out quickly.

Everything was very well organized, the directions were crystal clear, we hardly had to wait in line at all, and the tour went very smoothly with the audio guide in our language.

I really enjoyed the aquarium. We bought tickets online in advance, but the line at the box office was short. There were several rooms and lots of marine animals. You could even feed the fish in one of the rooms. We had a great time.

I bought tickets to the zoo at the last minute. They arrived quickly, which I was glad about, as I didn't waste any time waiting and had a great time. It's really beautiful, with each animal in its own habitat.
