About Barberini & GNAM galleries
The Palazzo Barberini, a 17th-century palace near Rome's Piazza Barberini, now houses the "Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica," the city's premier collection of ancient paintings. Originally acquired by Maffeo Barberini, later Pope Urban VIII, it was a villa purchased from the Sforza family for his cousins Taddeo, Francesco, and Antonio. Renowned artists like Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Borromini were enlisted to transform the villa into a magnificent palace. Today, it features 187 rooms spread over 12,000 m2, adorned with the Barberini family crest—a bee—found throughout the museum on ceilings and statues.
The "Barberini Faun," a stunning representation of a sleeping Satyr in the Greek "baroque" style, derives its name from Palazzo Barberini, where it was first housed upon its discovery.
The Palazzo Barberini was bought by Maffeo Barberini, known for leading the Baroque movement and for condemning Galileo Galilei.
