Did you know?

Castel Gandolfo served as the Pope’s summer retreat since 1626, until Pope Francis opened it to the public in 2016.

In September 2015, the Pope’s private train between Vatican City and Castel Gandolfo was opened to the public.

Between 1870 and 1929, no pope visited Castel Gandolfo due to political tensions with the Italian state.

The palace exhibits include unique artifacts like Pope Pius IX’s sedan chair and Pope John Paul II’s BMW.

Roman Emperor Domitian’s 1st-century villa once stood on the same grounds as the current palace and gardens.

Tuesday, August 4. We booked and purchased two tickets for the Papal Palace and the Secret Garden at Castel Gandolfo. When we arrived, we were surprised to find everything closed because the Holy Father had decided to stay an extra day at Castel Gandolfo. Officially, the website listed it as open and available for visits. The gendarmerie advised us to call the Vatican Museums’ customer service. They stated that the matter was outside their jurisdiction since the tickets had been purchased in advance by credit card through Headout. Unfortunately, your website does not list any phone number for information or assistance. After I sent three emails requesting a refund, and received three replies (all in English...) apologizing for the inconvenience and stating that they were looking into the reason for the closure, the full refund was credited to my card on the 16th. Aside from the fact that I was unable to visit the Papal Palace and the Secret Garden at Castel Gandolfo (perhaps for my next vacation in Rome)—which was not Headout’s fault—everything was handled very correctly and professionally. ... Thank you.

Magnificent works of art, with styles and techniques that varied depending on the subject; artifacts from the past preserved in impeccable condition; and beautifully maintained gardens that make you feel like you're in a fairy tale. I highly recommend this experience, which I personally enjoyed as a couple. 10/10

My visit to the Vatican Museums was unforgettable. I was amazed by the incredible collection of art, history, and architecture. Walking through the galleries felt like travelling through centuries of culture and creativity. The highlights for me were the beautifully decorated rooms, the stunning sculptures, and, of course, the Sistine Chapel. Seeing Michelangelo’s masterpiece in person was truly breathtaking. Despite the large number of visitors, the atmosphere was inspiring and made the experience feel very special. I especially appreciated how much history and artistic achievement can be explored in one place. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Rome.

We could never have navigated these busy sites without our expert guide - it was unbelievably busy and hot in high summer but the tour guide did a fantastic job of making it enjoyable and informative. I am a history buff and the guide managed to make some interesting points i hadn't considered about the exhibits whilst keeping us all together and navigating everything. Would definitely book this tour guide and this company again for other things. We're very glad we booked this tour.
