History of ZSL London Zoo
Since opening in the summer of 1828, this zoo in London has continuously functioned and is now regarded as the world's oldest scientific zoo. After being established by Sir Stamford Raffles and Sir Humphry Davy, Dr Peter Chalmers Mitchell was appointed secretary of the Society in 1902 and immediately began to dramatically change how the zoo was run. His biggest impactful change forced many animals who were previously kept indoors due to London's cold weather, out into the open where they could thrive. This idea was inspired by Hamburg Zoo at the time. Consequently, this led to newer and improved designs for many of the buildings housing these animals. Its collection today includes 17,500 individuals from over 750 species.
