Dressed in authentic attire, you'll learn the fundamentals of Japan's ceremonial archery and experience shooting a traditional bow in a beginner-friendly setting at Hiroshima Castle Sharaku.

Getting started

Arrive at Hiroshima Castle Sharaku and meet your instructor at the archery range. After a warm welcome, change into a traditional dogi and hakama, the clothing worn by kyudo practitioners. Your instructor will introduce the history, philosophy, equipment, and etiquette of Japanese archery before demonstrating the correct shooting techniques and ceremonial movements.

What to expect

• Begin with a guided introduction to kyudo, learning how this traditional martial art emphasizes mindfulness, precision, and respect as much as accuracy.

• Familiarize yourself with authentic kyudo equipment, including the Japanese bow and arrows, while your instructor explains proper handling, posture, and shooting form.

• Unlike traditional kyudo training, where beginners spend considerable time mastering the basics before shooting, this experience allows you to practice firing arrows under expert supervision from your very first lesson.

• Enjoy approximately 40 minutes of hands-on practice as you aim for the target, refine your technique, and appreciate the unique blend of physical skill and mental focus that defines Japanese archery.
