Valentine's Day in Rome

I had the chance to take a guided tour of St. Peter’s Basilica with Sam, and I highly recommend him. It was simply amazing! Sam speaks perfect French; he’s very understanding, attentive, and takes the time to answer all questions. He is an expert on his subject: his knowledge is impressive, and he knows how to convey it clearly and engagingly, without ever being too academic. The tour was punctuated by captivating anecdotes that made the experience even more vivid. He showed us everything with great pedagogy and enthusiasm. Plus, he really made the tour easier for us by letting us know how to handle the wait to get into the dome, which is a real bonus! Honestly, it was perfect from start to finish. Visiting the Vatican Museums was honestly one of those experiences that’s hard to fully put into words. I expected it to be impressive, but I didn’t realize just how massive and intense it would feel until I was actually there. It’s not just a museum but it feels like you’re walking through layers of history, one room after another. What I liked most was how every section had a different vibe. Some rooms felt so grand and detailed that you almost didn’t know where to look, while others felt calmer and gave you space to slow down a bit. I caught myself pausing more than I usually would in a museum, just to take in the small details of the ceilings, the colors, the expressions in the artwork. The Sistine Chapel was definitely the highlight. Even though it was crowded and a bit chaotic, there was still this quiet sense of awe in the room. Looking up at the ceiling in real life just hits differently and it’s way more powerful than any photo you’ve seen before. That said, it can get pretty overwhelming. There’s a lot of walking, a lot of people, and honestly, a lot to take in. After a while, everything starts to blur together if you’re not careful. If I could do it again, I’d probably focus on a few sections instead of trying to see everything. Overall, I’m really glad I went. It’s one of those places that lives up to the hype, even if it’s a bit exhausting. Definitely something I’ll remember for a long time.

Access to the meeting point was blocked, but the office responded immediately and apologized politely, even though they weren't to blame for the situation. A new meeting point was arranged right away, everything went perfectly, and the staff who escorted us to the entrance were super friendly despite the stress. Thanks for the great experience!

My day begins with a visit to Castel Sant'Angelo. Before me, the cylindrical mass of Castel Sant'Angelo rises like a sleeping giant that has shed its skin a thousand times: from imperial tomb to impregnable fortress, from prison to papal residence. I climb the spiral ramps, feeling the dampness of the millennia-old walls, until I emerge onto the Terrace of the Angel. There, at the foot of the bronze sword, the visitor is left breathless. Rome unfolds at its feet like a carpet of ochre-colored rooftops, and the dome of St. Peter’s seems so close you could almost touch it. Then, after a short walk, I reach the Pantheon. I enter quickly, without any trouble despite the presence of countless tourists. Crossing the threshold, I am overwhelmed by a sacred silence. I look up and lose myself in the immense dome, the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. The Oculus, that perfect circle open to infinity, captures a cylinder of light that cuts through the darkness like a divine blade. I stop at the exact center of the building. I feel tiny beneath that opening that welcomes the sun (and the rain, which falls here like diamond dust). Between the tombs of the kings and the silent grace of Raphael, I realize that if Castel Sant’Angelo is history in flux, the Pantheon is eternity standing still. It is now evening; I return to the hotel tired but happy. A fantastic day, thanks also to you.
