Visit to Herculaneum went smoothly and it was great to get straight in to the site. The audio guide was good but it wasn't always easy to tie up with each of the individual buildings on the site when you were there and it tended to automatically go to description for the next building at a different location - couldn't tie up the ordering with the numbers of each building on the site.

We arrived early and our guide Francesco replied quickly to my text and we started our tour early. He was extremely knowledgeable and was excellent and explaining everything we were seeing in way that made life in Hercullium easily understood. Two of our party were keen historians and he was able to answer all their questions that kept everyone engaged.

A magnificent historical site steeped in ancient Roman history. A must-see along with Pompeii. It's very convenient to buy tickets with Headout. There are no fixed entry times like in Pompeii. Easy to reach from the train station (just walk straight down to the end of the street).

My ticket included an audio guide, but when I arrived at the site, I was told it wasn't included and that I would have to pay extra. Irritating. Friendly and helpful staff. Would have appreciated written information boards at special buildings.

I liked the whole complex itself. I didn't like the audio guide at all, it is dropping audios at random. If you look for them, you find that the names of the houses are in Spanish, but in Ercolano they are in Italian, you lose a lot of time and consumes a lot of battery of the mobile. In the end I stopped listening because I was getting black and just enjoyed the walk. Once outside I saw that people were entering a wall, I missed that part because neither the guide nor signs indicated it. For my taste there was a lack of info. Still, beautiful site, super well preserved.

Getting tickets was very quick, and accessing the site was fast too. The only unclear point about the ticket sold on Headout was the audio guide, which I think is a misnomer because it's directly in the Headout app, so on your phone. Don't do what I did and try to pick up traditional audio guides at the ticket office provided for that purpose!!! Be careful, if you don't have headphones, everyone around you will be able to hear you... In addition, the app had trouble geolocating me on the site, so I started with explanations that weren't correct. Once I got it sorted out, the explanations were extremely comprehensive, but also very long. GOOD TO KNOW: The site closes 20 minutes before the end of the scheduled visiting time, so your visit will be shortened by that amount. After that, you will no longer have access to anything (restrooms, gift shop, etc.), and the entrance/exit will be closed, forcing you to take a much longer route (the one used by cars).

The site was very interesting and manageable in size. Unfortunately it was very difficult to follow the guide partly because the labelling on the buildings was poor and partly because having finally matched a building to the audio guide when the section finished it went off to describe somewhere completely different and was impossible to follow. The site needed much better labelling and more information boards. The sequencing of the audio guide was so poor that we gave up on it. I would not recommend this guide

The signage on the houses was different from what was in the guidebook in English! It was total chaos. Unfortunately, I got pretty annoyed. At the very least, every guidebook should use the same numbering system. Otherwise, you end up spending way too much time searching instead of looking around! Maybe it would be nice to have the guidebook available in German as well. Otherwise, the online booking worked great and was fast—the tickets arrived right away!

What to bring

Carry a valid photo ID or passport for verification at entry.

If you opt for a digital audio guide, bring your own headphones for a better listening experience.

Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear as the ground is uneven in many areas.

Since most of the visit takes place outdoors, pack sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and a hat. The site remains open in all weather conditions, so a light raincoat or umbrella is also useful.

What’s not allowed

Large backpacks, suitcases, and bulky luggage cannot be brought inside or on transfer services.

Food and drinks are not included and may be restricted in certain zones.

Pets are not allowed, except for certified service animals.

Smoking, alcohol, and any prohibited substances are strictly banned on-site.

Flash photography and the use of tripods or professional filming gear may be limited in some areas.

Accessibility

Due to uneven surfaces and steep sections, the site is not fully accessible and may pose challenges for visitors with reduced mobility.

Some ramp access can be arranged at the entrance for those with motor disabilities, though not all parts of the site can be reached.

Accessible restrooms are available.

There is no facility for storing luggage on-site.

The guidebook is available only in English and in a digital, downloadable format. No hard copies available.

Children must be accompanied by an adult during the visit.

Certain areas may be closed temporarily due to restoration work or operational needs.

The site is open from 8:30am to 5pm from 15 October to 15 March (last entry 3:30pm), and from 8:30am to 7:30pm between 16 March and 14 October (last entry 6pm).

Free admission is offered on the first Sunday of each month and on select public holidays; reduced fares are available for eligible visitors with valid ID.

If you’re using a digital audio guide app, it’s best to download it before arrival as mobile network coverage on-site may be limited.
