Savour a delightfully humorous exploration of humanity’s inherent desire for revenge and violence in this brilliant black comedy by Academy Award-winning playwright Martin McDonagh!

  • Set in Oldham, England in the year 1965, Hangmen follows the tragic tale of Harry Wade. As the second-best executioner in town, Harry is often plagued by professional jealousy and a bloated sense of self-importance. He also owns a pub in the same town with his daughter, Shirley, and wife, Alice. After England abolishes capital punishment altogether, his life is turned upside down. Strangers begin filing into Harry’s pub with questions about his old profession. When a man named Mooney begins to provoke Harry by visiting his bar and flirting with his daughter, the professional hangman must decide what must be done with the despicable stranger.

First presented at London’s Royal Court Theatre in September 2015, Hangmen is a true masterpiece that went on to win innumerable awards including the Olivier Award, Evening Standard Theatre Awards, and the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards. Academy Award and BAFTA Award-winning writer Martin McDonagh ingeniously tells a sharply humorous tale about the darker side of human ambition.
