British writer Judith Kerr sold over 10 million copies across the world, and published The Tiger Who Came to Tea in 1968. It continues to be extremely popular among children, with a television adaptation all set to air on Channel 4 in the UK.
David Wood’s brilliant adaptation captures the humour of the original story, the over-the-top antics, and double-takes making it a hilarious show. The staging is perfect, giving the audience the feeling as if they have stepped into a children’s book. The costume design is also top-notch, and are an excellent recreation of Kerr’s memorable illustrations. Wood, once proclaimed by The Times as The National Children’s Dramatist in in charge of direction for this musical. Well known for his stage adaptations of Roald Dahl classics, Wood promises a holiday hit!
Sophie is a young girl living with her parents. She is enjoying tea one day with her mother in the kitchen when an amicable tiger knocks on their door. He politely asks Sophie and her mother if he can join them for tea. The tiger drinks all the tea in the house, eats all the food, and even manages to drink all the water! He then leaves.
When Sophie’s father returns in the evening, he finds that all the food and water in the house has been finished. The family decides to go out and enjoy a meal at a cafe. The following day, expecting the tiger to return, Sophie and her mother buy a lot of food (including tiger food)!
