what to expect on this walking tour of pompeii?
This tour is the only way to see the newly uncovered and inaugurated public buildings and the oldest and most important landmarks in the city.
A Series of Once-Lively Public Spaces
Check out the theater district, the main street lined with artisan stores and hot baths, the central plaza surrounded by a plethora of temples, and the seldom visited area to the north of the excavations, where the most current excavations are taking place.
These include the amphitheater and the forum. The 20,000-seat amphitheater was one of Pompeii's largest structures. The amphitheater has been restored to the point that spectators may walk on the stage and go all the way around it. The Forum was the heart of civic and social activity in ancient Pompeii. Admire the neighboring Basilica, which doubled as a courtroom, and the ancient Temple of Jupiter.
Ancient Pompeii was also known for its fast food restaurants called thermopolium which sold a variety of food, like fish, cheese, bread, and even snails. Around 80 have been discovered, the latest in 2020.
Remnants of Life in Private Spaces
Take a tour of a newly uncovered and reconstructed ancient aristocratic mansion and see the remnants of lives that perished in the Vesuvius disaster.
The Garden of the Fugitives is where you can see plaster replicas of victims of the Vesuvius eruption. These casts, a terrifying reminder of the disaster that befell the city, were only recently discovered.
One of the exposed buildings is Porta Marina, a major entrance to the city. Modern conservation efforts have allowed the original paintings and inscriptions on this gate to be conserved, ensuring its status as a significant historical site. The House of the Faun, recently restored, is the largest residence in Pompeii. This grand home is decorated with works of art such as paintings, mosaics, and sculptures.
