Pro tips to help you make a pick

Check ticket inclusions carefully before paying. Standard entry usually covers the Wonders of Iceland exhibitions and 360° deck, while the timed Áróra northern lights show is only included when explicitly listed.

Plan around 2–3 hours for standard entry. If your ticket includes Áróra, allow roughly 2.5–3.5 hours total so the scheduled showtime does not make the rest of the visit feel rushed.

Prebook online in peak summer and holiday periods, especially if you want a specific Áróra showtime. Online tickets may also let you skip the on-site purchase queue and go straight to admissions scanning.

If the observation deck is a priority, aim for a clear-weather day and consider morning or late afternoon, when visitor reports suggest lighter crowds and softer light for photos.

Arrive 10–15 minutes before your Áróra showtime. Reviewers note that earlier arrival helps with seat choice and avoids being placed at the edges when shows are busy.

Compare standalone entry with combos only if you truly want the add-ons. Perlan combinations can include transfers or other Reykjavík attractions, but they are less flexible than buying only the experiences you will use.

If you already plan to buy a Reykjavík city card or attraction pass, verify whether Perlan is included or discounted before booking a separate ticket. Inclusion partners can change over time.

Budget travelers who mainly want views should compare Perlan with other Reykjavík viewpoints first. Perlan gives better value when you also want the ice cave, nature exhibitions, and possibly Áróra.

For winter visits without a car, think about transport before booking a tight time slot. Perlan is about 2.2 km from central Reykjavík, and the final approach is uphill, which can be less comfortable in icy conditions.

About Perlan Museum

Unlike museums that focus on one period or collection, Perlan – Wonders of Iceland packs glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, seabirds, climate change, and city views into one stop. Its standout difference is scale of experience rather than gallery count: you can enter a real-ice cave, watch a dome-screen aurora show, and look over Reykjavík from an outdoor terrace in the same visit.

Did you know?

Perlan stands on former hot water storage tanks that once helped distribute geothermal water around Reykjavík; today those tanks house exhibitions and a planetarium.

The museum’s artificial ice cave is built from hundreds of tons of real Icelandic ice and kept below freezing, creating glacier-like conditions indoors.

Áróra was produced with Icelandic artists and scientists, combining real aurora footage with educational narration about how the northern lights form.

The glass dome and observation deck were added in the early 1990s, transforming a functional utility building into a landmark on Öskjuhlíð hill.

From the deck, visitors can often spot Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa Concert Hall, and Reykjavík Domestic Airport, using the panorama to orient themselves in the city.

Why visit Perlan Museum?

Walk Through a Real-Ice Cave Indoors

Perlan’s glacier zone includes an artificial ice cave made from hundreds of tons of real Icelandic ice. Kept below freezing, it lets you experience icy tunnels in central Reykjavík while learning how glaciers form, develop crevasses, and change over time.

Áróra Show Brings the Northern Lights Inside

The Áróra northern lights show takes place in a planetarium-style theater and uses real aurora footage on a domed screen. Produced with Icelandic artists and scientists, it combines visuals with narration about how auroras form, making it especially useful when weather or season makes real sightings uncertain.

360° Views from Öskjuhlíð Hill

The top-level observation deck looks out over Reykjavík, Faxaflói Bay, and surrounding mountains and volcano silhouettes. Orientation signs help you spot landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa Concert Hall, and the domestic airport, turning the terrace into both a viewpoint and a city map.

Volcano, Earthquake, and Geothermal Exhibits

Perlan’s geology displays explain Iceland’s tectonic setting through interactive exhibits and models focused on eruptions, seismic activity, and geothermal energy. They give useful context before or after trips to places like the Golden Circle or South Coast, where those natural forces shape the landscape.

Museum Built Inside Former Water Tanks

Perlan stands on former hot water storage tanks that once helped distribute geothermal water around Reykjavík. Those tanks now house exhibitions and a planetarium, and the glass dome and observation deck added in the early 1990s turned the utility structure into one of the city’s best-known silhouettes.

Plan your visit

Main Entrance (Front Plaza Entrance)

Located at the top of the access road and parking lot on Öskjuhlíð hill, this is the main entrance beneath Perlan’s glass dome and is signposted “Perlan.” All standard visitors, pre-booked ticket holders, and groups use this entrance. Tickets are scanned at the admissions desk just inside, and third-party vouchers may need validation there as well. Queues are usually short, though summer afternoons can be busier. Access from the parking area is level or ramped, and elevators inside connect the exhibition floors and observation deck. Light bag checks may occur at entry.
