Did you know?

1. Musee d’Orsay has an extensive collection of over 45,000 photographs, making it one of the first French museums to recognize photography as a form of art.

2. The museum features reconstructed rooms from the apartments of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the 19th-century French ruling class.

3. Orsay Museum is mentioned in numerous written works, including an acclaimed literary work, “The Elegance of the Hedgehog” by Muriel Barbery.

4. The elevators at the museum are adorned with miniature reproductions of famous artworks, adding a touch of whimsy to a mundane ride and turning it into a mini art gallery experience.

5. You can set your inner artist free by discovering the secret Impressionist-themed photo booth, where you can take selfies transformed into your very own masterpiece.

Why visit Orsay Museum?

Abode of Impressionist Art

Musee d’Orsay is known for its extensive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artworks. It houses over 3,000 art pieces, which include magnificent masterpieces like Monet’s Water Lillies, Van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhone, and Edouard Manet’s Olympia.

Sculptures and Decorative Arts

Complementing the large volume of its renowned paintings, Orsay Museum also features a diverse collection of sculptures and decorative arts. These collections include objects from the 19th century, from the Second Empire to the Art Nouveau period.

The Beautiful Architectural Aesthetics

Orsay Museum is built where Gare d’Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station, once stood. The slanted roof, the embellishments of a lion’s head, laurel leaves and oak branches on the façade, and the glass canopy allowing natural light to bathe the museum makes for a gorgeous setting that you must check out!

The Clock View

The large clock window on the fifth floor is one of the most striking features of the museum. You get a bird’s-eye view of the Seine River, the Louvre, Sacre Couer, and the Tuileries Garden from here. It is also a remnant of the Gare d’Orsay railway station, preserved to represent the 19th century’s architecture.

Special Installation

Musee d’Orsay is home to a highly unique installation. The 1:100 scale model provides an aerial view of the Paris Opera and its neighboring areas. Since the model is encased under the glass flooring, when visitors walk across the museum, they gain an intriguing perspective into Paris's urban and architectural development from 1855-1914.

Le Paradis was spectacular—highly recommended for a cabaret experience in Paris; we loved it. On the other hand, we didn't enjoy the Seine river cruise; the boat didn't have a place to serve drinks or food, so I wouldn't really recommend it.

The part of the tour along the Canal Saint-Martin was particularly impressive and beautiful, as we passed through six locks. In addition, clear explanations were provided in both French and English. My 14-year-old granddaughter also thought it was a highlight of our trip to Paris. Truly a unique experience!
