Why You Should Watch Soho Cinders
Why You Should Watch Soho Cinders
Conceived by Olivier Award-winning writers George Stiles, Anthony Drewe, and Elliot Davis, Soho Cinders is a radical revision of the Cinderella trope. In this story, a lost mobile phone replaces Cinderella's glass slipper. The writers intended the musical to be an unpredictable thematic blend of romance, politics, and the nuances of everyday life. Stiles and Drewe had worked on several well-received pieces, including the Olivier Award-winning hit ‘Honk!’ and the Disney production of Mary Poppins, before they began working on Soho Cinders. In many ways, this musical was a culmination of their vast experiences, yet something refreshingly new in flavor and tone. With Elliot joining the creative team, the story encompassed a wide range of ideas; it became a fable that thoroughly examined modern politics and our relationship with it. The original writers were delighted that the show is making a triumphant return to London in Will Keith’s amazing production.
The Story
A male escort named Robbie, who platonically shares his apartment with the loving Velcro, finds himself being cruelly threatened with eviction by his stepsisters. London’s bisexual mayoral candidate, James Prince, is enamored with the young Robbie. Prince, however, has his own problems to wrestle with. He is suffocated by the professional grasp of a political fundraiser. As their worlds collide in spectacular fashion, the aspiring mayor and his dashing escort must struggle to achieve their own fairy-tale ending.

Critic Reviews
“You come out almost believing, as one of Drewe's lyrics asserts, that ‘life's a circus in Old Compton Street’.”
