Glamorously presented through beautifully-designed sets, Simon Callow’s English adaptation of Jean Poiret’s original farce (deliberately absurd theatre) is a refreshingly funny production!

why you should watch la cage aux folles
For its time, La Cage aux Folles was a revolutionary comedic piece that fearlessly delved into homosexuality, a hotly debated issue in the 1970s. It took a certain degree of genius on Jean Poiret’s part to create a humorous classic using such a sensitive theme. After its release in 1973, the play ran for an amazing 1800 performances with Michael Serrault and Jean Poiret himself leading the on-stage cast for many presentations. The play inspired several books, films, and musical productions over the years. It was revived through the American movie The Birdcage.
The play is an interesting reflection on how far we have come in terms of social open-mindedness. It still manages to evoke all the laughs that made the original such a renowned comedic play.
The Story
Georges is a Nightclub owner in St. Tropez who is in love with a flamboyant drag artist named Albin. Their son, Laurent, unwittingly decides to get engaged to the daughter of a radically right-wing politician who intends to make quick work of all the remaining night clubs in St.Tropez and bring the district’s nightlife to a screeching halt. Utter chaos ensues when their son’s super-conservative parents arrive at their residence for dinner. Georges and Albin must hide their true nature as they entertain their in-laws-to-be for the sake of their son. How long can they keep up the act? Will Laurent finally marry the politician’s daughter? Find out in this outrageously funny theatrical masterpiece!
