Jerry Herman’s musical, La Cage aux Folles will now be performed at Regent Park’s Open Air Theatre, with Olivier award-winner Timothy Sheader at its helm. The original play by Jean Poiret has inspired 4 blockbuster films and numerous award-winning revivals. La Cage aux Follies is uproariously funny and will have you in stitches. It is a sharp and slapstick social satire that speaks to audiences all over the world. More importantly, La Cage aux Folles is about people who are kind, genuine, and unable to keep from being true to themselves. In the musical, two gay men try to pretend to be straight for the sake of their son, who is engaged to the daughter of a conservative politician who wants to ban drag clubs and anything deemed immoral. Sometimes maudlin, sometimes farcical, the musical’s underlying message to embrace who we are is especially relevant and relatable today.
