Why Watch A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Written towards the end of the 16th century, William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of the world's most renowned comedies and continues to be widely performed across the world today. The play explores themes of love while blurring the line between reality and fantasy.

Matt Harrison, the former Resident Director of the National Theatre New Works is in charge of directing the production. Along with the youngest and most promising talent from the 2019 National Youth Theatre Rep Company, the play is all set to dazzle audiences at West End. Harrison ensures that Shakespeare fans can witness their favourite characters come to life on the big stage.

Hermia is in love with Lysander. She tries to resist her father's demand to get married to Demetrius. Helena’s best friend, Hermia, was with Demetrius before they broke up due to his impending marriage to Helena. Hermia, however, is still in love with Demetrius, and pines for him.

Helena’s father Egeus is angered at Helena’s refusal to marry Demetrius, and he plans to invoke an ancient Athenian law whereby a daughter must marry the suitor chosen by the father, or else be sent to the gallows. On hearing about this, Duke Theseus of Athens gives Helena another choice: life as a nun worshipping the goddess Artemis.

While these love-stricken youth are attempting to escape their forced marriages, a fight erupts between the King and Queen of Fairies and a troupe of actors who are rehearsing for their play. Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow is a fairy who has been spreading around a potion of love, which leads to a man getting the head of an ass.
