Visit The King’s Gallery
Immerse yourself in 18th-century fashion and Scottish history with a visit to the King's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. While the Palace dates back to the 16th century, the buildings used for the King's Gallery were built in the 1840s with funds from the Duchess of Gordon. Originally constructed as a church and school, it wasn't until 1999 that plans began to transform it into an art gallery. Once you enter the King's Gallery, visit the Style & Society: Dressing the Georgians exhibition.
Explore 18th-century fashion
This exhibition uses fashion as a lens to explore the social, political, and technological shifts that shaped 18th-century Britain. Admire paintings by renowned artists like Gainsborough and Hogarth, alongside a stunning array of clothing and accessories. One of the exhibition's highlights is a special section dedicated to King George IV's historic visit to Scotland in 1822, the first by a reigning monarch in nearly 200 years. Here, you'll see rare items like a jeweled sword and embroidered bonnet.
