You move from richly furnished State Rooms and the art collection to the Outer Bailey, then into family activities such as broomstick training and scheduled film or history tours.

Alnwick Castle is the second-largest inhabited castle in England, after Windsor, and it has been the seat of the Percy family for over 700 years.

The castle began in the 11th century, but much of what visitors see today also reflects major 18th- and 19th-century Gothic Revival alterations.

Within the State Rooms, the library holds thousands of volumes and has also been used as a film and TV location.

Alnwick Castle is privately owned, not part of English Heritage or the National Trust, so those memberships do not grant free entry.

Photography is restricted or banned in parts of the State Rooms, which often catches out visitors who expect to be able to photograph every interior.

Ramparts and Grassy Banks with Town Views

The walls, ramparts, and grassy embankments show the castle’s defensive character while also opening wide views over Alnwick town and the surrounding countryside. On fine days, these areas double as relaxed picnic and play space, giving the visit more room to breathe than an interiors-only castle tour.

Main Castle Admissions Entrance

This is the primary entrance for most visitors. It is reached from the main Alnwick Castle visitor car park via signed paths leading to the main gate and visitor courtyard, where tickets are purchased, checked, and scanned before entry to the castle grounds. Use this entrance for standard admission, families, and independent visitors arriving on foot from town. The approach from the car park is step-free, but surfaces can be uneven and access inside the historic interiors varies. Expect queues here at opening time and on busy holiday dates, especially for ticket purchase and validation.

Group / Coach Entry

Pre-booked groups and organised coach visitors use the same general gateway area as individual visitors, with coach drop-off or parking nearby. After arriving, groups are processed through the admissions area before entering the main castle grounds. This is the best access point for day tours and larger parties. Accessibility on the approach is similar to the main entrance, and coach operators may assist guests with mobility needs. Because groups are processed together, this entrance flow can add short peaks to the main admissions queue.
