your experience
Situated along the Old Appian Way, one of the earliest and most strategically important roads of Ancient Rome, are the Catacombs of Vigna Randanini. These catacombs are one of only seven such known complexes, utilized specifically for Jewish burials, a detail that sets these Catacombs apart historically as well as in design.
Though the Vigna Randanini Catacombs are generally closed to the general public, this private tour gives you special and exclusive access to the Catacombs, so you can walk through and see the tombs of the dead carved into the soft volcanic stone, characteristic of the area. The dead were placed in painted loculi and cubicula, separate cavities or rooms, and kokhims, narrow shafts radiating from a central chamber where the dead were placed for burial. The kokhims, along with the marble epitaphs in Greek and Latin with which many tombs and openings were sealed, set these apart from their Pagan and Christian counterparts and make these Catacombs well worth the visit!
