Step Back in Time with Centuries of History
With skip-the-line entry, you will have plenty of time to explore the complex at your own pace. Built as a Carthusian monastery between 1325 and 1368, this charterhouse turned museum is the quintessential example of Baroque art and architecture. Made up of one hundred rooms, two churches, four chapels, three cloisters, and hanging gardens, this grand monastic complex, sitting high above the city on Vomero Hill, is home to an extraordinary repository of Neapolitan and Italian art history. Famous artists belonging to the 16th and 17th centuries have left their mark here, such as Francesco Solimena, Massimo Stanzione, Giuseppe de Ribera, Battista Caracciolo, and more.
Art and Architecture Marvels
Altogether, the structure expresses Neapolitan Baroque in its fullest sense, celebrating examples like the inlaid marble work in the central nave by Cosimo Fanzago, and numerous other works of art. Highlights certainly include the church with its sculptures, marble, and paintings, and the Major and Minor Cloisters. The Historical Section of the museum uses images and objects to narrate the story of Naples from the 15th to the 19th century, from the Angevin and Aragonese monarchies to the Spanish Viceroy period, the Bourbon reign, and the Unification of Italy.
