About Carisbrooke Castle

Carisbrooke Castle combines a medieval fortress, Charles I’s imprisonment rooms, live well-house demonstrations, and a museum in one hilltop site. The visit pairs a 17th-century donkey wheel with a formal garden linked to Princess Beatrice and rampart walks over the island countryside. That mix of Civil War history, outdoor space, and museum displays makes it a varied half-day stop.

Did you know?

Carisbrooke’s donkeys do not work all day. Scheduled demonstrations use a 17th-century wheel to draw water from a 49-metre-deep well, and the sessions are limited for animal welfare.

Why visit Carisbrooke Castle?

360° Views from the Curtain Walls

The ramparts circle the hilltop site and open out over Newport and the central Isle of Wight countryside. Walking them also shows how the castle’s defensive layout works, though some stretches involve steep, uneven steps and low parapets.

Main entrance gate (Carisbrooke Castle gatehouse)

Located at the top of Castle Hill, beyond the pay-and-display car park and the English Heritage visitor centre, this is the only public entrance to the castle. All visitors use this gate, including ticket holders, members, and groups, with tickets or memberships checked and scanned at the admissions point before entering the inner areas. Facilities nearby include the ticket office, visitor centre, small shop, toilets, and an accessible toilet. Expect an uphill approach from the car park, followed by further slopes and steps inside. Wheelchair access is limited mainly to lower levels and some outer areas, and there is no separate fast-track line; busy holiday and weekend periods can bring short ticket-office queues.
