Why visit Buda Castle?
Plan your visit
Szent György tér Main Gate
Located at Szent György Square, this is the primary entrance for visitors arriving by bus (lines 16/116) or on foot from the city center. The gate opens directly onto the main castle plaza and is the most convenient access point for the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum. The entrance is step-free and suitable for wheelchairs, though some inner courtyards and museum areas may have cobblestones or limited ramps.
Funicular Entrance (Clark Ádám tér)
Situated at the top of the historic Castle Hill Funicular, this entrance is ideal for those arriving from the Chain Bridge area. The funicular delivers you directly to the castle plateau, just steps from the main courtyards. The funicular is accessible for visitors with limited mobility, but note that some castle paths beyond the station are uneven or cobbled.
Várkert Bazár Elevator & Escalator Entrance
On the north side of Castle Hill, the Várkert Bazár complex offers a free elevator and escalator, providing step-free access from the riverside up to the castle gardens and courtyards. This is the best option for wheelchair users, families with strollers, or anyone seeking to avoid the hill climb. Signage is clear from the Danube promenade.
Dísz tér Gate
Located at the western end of the castle district, this entrance is popular with those exploring Castle Hill on foot from the Buda side. It leads into the quieter courtyards and is close to Sándor Palace. Accessibility is moderate, with some steps and cobblestones.
Audio guides are available for rent at the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum in multiple languages.
Souvenir shops are located within the castle complex, offering gifts, books, and local crafts.
Dining outlets and cafés are available on-site, including terrace cafés with scenic views.
Toilets are available throughout the castle complex and inside the museums.
Paid parking is extremely limited on Castle Hill. Most visitors are encouraged to use public transport or the funicular.
First aid services are available within the castle complex for minor medical needs.
Information desks are located at main entrances and inside the museums to assist visitors.
A limited number of wheelchairs are available for loan at the museums. Please inquire at the information desk.
Some areas of Buda Castle are wheelchair accessible, but historic sections and certain museum galleries may have limited access due to stairs and uneven surfaces.
Elevator access is available in select buildings, including the National Gallery and History Museum. Ask staff for directions to accessible routes.
