Set sail from Húsavík on a silent, carbon neutral oak boat for a whale watching tour and marine wildlife adventure.
Getting started
Arrive at the North Sailing meeting point in Húsavík, where crew members greet you and guide you to the oak boat. After a quick safety briefing and ticket check, you’ll board and prepare for departure.
What to expect
North Sailing, established in 1995 in Húsavík, is recognized as Iceland’s pioneer in whale watching. This tour offers an authentic marine wildlife experience on a carbon neutral vessel. The electric engine of Andvari makes no noise, allowing the boat to approach passing whales with minimal disturbance while keeping the tour fully sustainable.
About Andvari
Originally constructed in Akureyri in 1975, this oak vessel is North Sailing’s 10th restored heritage boat, carefully rebuilt into a fully electric, carbon-neutral cruiser in 2015. Its name, chosen through a public competition, comes from Old Norse and translates to “a gentle breeze that glides silently through the air.” It’s a fitting identity for a boat that now sails Skjálfandi Bay without engine rumble, letting guests hear the ocean, the seabirds, and even the first whale blow echo across the water.
What to bring
-
Although warm overalls will be provided, dress in warm, layered clothing and carry a windproof, waterproof jacket. The weather on Skjálfandi Bay can shift drastically.
-
Opt for sturdy, non-slip shoes that keep you steady on the deck.
-
A hat, gloves, and scarf go a long way on this breezy bay.
-
Bring a camera or binoculars if you want to capture close-up moments, but avoid flash to keep the experience gentle for the whales.
What’s not allowed
-
For safety and space reasons, large bags, suitcases, and bulky luggage can’t be taken onboard.
-
Alcohol, drugs, or boarding under the influence are strictly prohibited.
-
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the vessel.
-
Pets must stay ashore, except for registered service animals.
