Determined to rule all of England, Richard, the Duke of Gloucester has slain a king and the king’s son. The only people who stand in his path to absolute power are a couple of incapable nephews and two gullible brothers, also called the Princes in the Tower. Whoever gets in his way are headed for doom.

Why Watch Richard III

The famous Shakespearean villain is brought to life by the prolific Tom Mothersdale. He has worked in plays such as Cleansed, The Glass Menagerie and John and has given incredible performances. Mothersdale is famous for his roles in Overlord, Peaky Blinders and Hanna. Richard III is an all-new production that is directed by John Haidar, a Headlong Associate Artist. A co-production between Bristol Old Vic, Headlong, and Alexandra Palace, along with Northampton, Oxford Playhouse and Royal & Derngate, this is nothing less than a power packed production.

The Story

The balance of the entire nation hangs by but a thread after years of civil war. The country is desperate for a saviour and in comes Richard, the Duke of Gloucester. Although he was not born a king, he is determined to become one and alter the course of history. Richard is hell-bent on wearing the crown and the morality of his actions are barely his concern anymore. Having done away with the king and his son, he sets his eyes on the Princes in the Tower: two naive bothers and a pair of powerless cousins. Thus begins his campaign of exploitation, deception, and bloodshed. However, behind all the blood spilt there lies a hidden yearning to be loved. Grotesque and dramatic, Richard III is one of the most iconic and captivating Shakespearean villains ever created.
