Why You Shouldn’t Miss This

There is no doubt that the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is quintessential Iceland. The Hraunfossar and Barnafoss streams consist of innumerable rivulets falling into a glacier river from a lava field. Deildartunguhver, another major attraction in Iceland, is a hot spring that emits a stunning 180 liters of boiling water every second.
Reykholt served as the intellectual hub of medieval Iceland. Snorri Sturluson was a philosopher from this region who defined the country’s culture and traditions. He was also one of the first Icelanders to construct his own geothermal pool. Perhaps the most delightful aspects of Iceland are the ethereal lights that paint the clear night sky with vibrant colors. Caused due to natural ionic interactions with atoms in the upper atmosphere, Aurora Borealis awed humankind for centuries.
When magma came in contact with the violent waves of the Atlantic Ocean many years ago, spectacular coastal cliffs were formed at the coast of Arnarstapi. Erosion over the centuries has caused interesting formations like stone arcs and blowholes along the shore. Formed more than 5000 years ago due to a volcanic eruption, the Vatnshellir lava cave has interesting stalactites and stalagmites in its depths. Djúpalónssandur and Saxhóll are both superb natural wonders in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Kirkjufell, or Church Mountain, is another fantastic sight on this tour that was formed 12,000 years ago during the last ice age.

Your Experience

This 2-day tour covers most of the amazing sights and hikes that the Snæfellsnes Peninsula has to offer. Your tour will begin at Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Enjoy the sight of hundreds of tiny streams trickling into a glacial river. You will then be led to Deildartunguhver, one of Europe’s most potent hot springs. You can feel the hot steam caressing your face as you stand in front of this geothermal wonder. A small village called Reykholt, a treasure trove of Icelandic culture, is the next part of the trip. Learn about the traditions and philosophies compiled by one of the nation’s ideological founding fathers, Snorri Sturluson.
You will then head to Gerðuberg, a magnificent wall of basalt columns, some of which are as tall as 15 meters. Get an amazing view of the surrounding mountains and craters from this spot. Once you reach your hotel Stykkishólmur, where you will be staying for the night, you can have dinner and consult your guide about watching the Aurora. If luck favors you, the skies might be clear, and you will get an excellent view of the Northern Lights. On the second day of this tour, you will visit Arnarstapi, a small fishing village on the west coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Witness the rock formations that resulted from centuries of erosion along the shoreline.
Next, you will descend into the lava cave of Vatnshellir. The cave guide will help you explore the place and see the stalactites and stalagmites. Emerge from the underworld and visit Lóndrangar, a 75-meter basalt rock by the sea. You might spot many seabirds like fulmars and puffins here. At the black-pebbled beach of Djúpalónssandur, you can attempt to lift the “lifting stones” and prove your worth as Icelandic men once did! A stairway will lead you to the top of a crater called Saxhóll. From here, you can see the entirety of the Snæfellsjökull National Park. The tour will conclude with a visit to the 12,000-year-old ‘Church Mountain,’ Kirkjufell. With so many breathtaking locations to visit over a period of two days, this is a tour you cannot miss.
