Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
Situated on a tectonic plate boundary, Iceland is constantly being pulled apart, albeit by only 2 centimeters a year. Its unique geology has given rise to some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world. With glacial rivers, lava fields and a number of mountains formed due to extensive volcanic activity, a diverse number of sights are possible on a tour around the country.
The Kerið volcanic crater is believed to have been a volcano that emptied the reserves of magma and collapsed on itself. Since the area does not show any evidence of large explosions of the magnitude of a meteorite crash, this seems to be the most plausible theory. Geysir is present in the geothermal region of western Iceland. Believed to have been active for an astounding 10,000 years, it is one of the oldest geysers ever mentioned in print. As a result, it was the first such phenomenon people across the globe had heard of, and the word ‘geyser’ is actually derived from Geysir.
The tour will begin with a visit to the Kerið volcanic crater. The surrounding regions are teeming with several crater lakes, of which Kerlo is a favorite among visitors. The confluence of the red lava rock at the lakebed and the blue-green water presents a breathtaking scene. Next up is a visit to the Gullfoss Waterfall, which translates to Golden Waterfall. The unique geology of the region will cause a shimmering effect, as the water plunges into the canyon. You will soon understand how the waterfall obtained its name.
Next up on the itinerary is a visit to the geothermal region of Haukadalur. It is also known as Geysir Geothermal area, named after one of the oldest recorded geysers in history. You will catch sight of the massive eruption of the hot spring Strokkur every few minutes. Fuel yourself for the activities of the rest of the day with some local delicacies at this popular spot. Finally, you will visit the renowned Thingvellir National Park. The crystal clear waters are a sight to behold and is the perfect spot for divers to explore the underwater beauty. The coalescence of a multitude of shades of blue, green and brown makes for one of the most stunning sights that you have ever witnessed.
After covering nearly 300 kilometers in 8 hours of travel, your bus tour of the Golden Circle will conclude.
