Why You Shouldn't Miss This
The urban landscape of Barcelona is very unique. The heavy, and heady, influence of Art Nouveau and Catalan Modernisme is clearly visible and almost palpable. This 4.5 guided tour will take you two of the most iconic landmarks of Barcelona that exemplify the Modernisme movement - The Sagrada Familia and Park Guell.
Depending on your choice, the tour will begin either at Park Guell or The Sagrada Familia. The Sagrada Familia is one of the most recognizable symbols of Barcelona. This monumental basilica has been under construction in 1882 and is slated to be completed only in 2026, a hundred years after the death of its architect, Antoni Gaudi. Though the Sagrada Familia is only 70% complete, it has been consecrated by the Pope and is also a deemed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once completed, the Sagrada Familia will be the tallest structure in Barcelona and the tallest church in the world.
Park Guell, on the other hand, is Gaudi’s dedication to nature - a park he designed for Count Eusebi Güell. The park was originally envisioned as a housing development program for the affluent and he chose Gaudi to design the park. Designed with a typical Catalan Modernisme flair, Park Guell today is a public park that belongs to the city's heritage. Uniquely designed with the use of mosaics (a style known as trencadís in Catalan) and supported by around 86 doric columns. Constructed between 1900 and 1914, Park Guell perfectly portrays Gaudi’s design principles - uniting nature and architecture.
Once you complete your booking for this guided tour of the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, you will receive an email containing the voucher. Depending on the time you select, the tour will begin either at Park Guell or The Sagrada Familia. The 10:00 AM tour begins at Park Guell and then goes to Sagrada Familia. The 4:00 PM tour, on the other hand, begins at the Sagrada Familia before going to Park Guell.
If your tour begins at Park Guell, then you should head to the designated location where you will meet your guide. The exact address of the location is - Souvenirs Shop, located in Olot Street number 12, in front of main entrance of Park Güell. On the other hand, if your tour begins at Sagrada Familia, then the address of the designated location is - Julia Central de Viajes office in Plaza Sagrada Familia 3.
At Park Guell, your guide will take you up the enigmatic staircase that marks the entrance of the park. On the other side, you will find Gaudi’s mosaic dragon waiting for you. Park Guell is arranged around a large central square with a “trencadís” bench that snakes around it. With varying colours and curved lines, Park Guell is an urban retreat unlike any other, perfectly portraying Gaudi’s design principles.
At the Sagrada Familia, your tour guide will guide you past the long ticket lines straight to the brief security check and then into the Sagrada Familia. You will see the Nativity and Passion Facades and understand the significance behind them. Inside the basilica, your guide will show you the extreme designs incorporated into the church’s construction and the finely detailed works of the beautiful stained glass windows.
You will also be able to visit the Sagrada Familia Museum. The museum started out as a school by Antoni Gaudi for the children of those working on the construction of the Sagrada Familia. Today, it is a museum dedicated to the basilica and to Antoni Gaudi as well. You will see drawings and plaster models made by Antoni Gaudi as well as pictures on the history and development of the Sagrada Familia.
