William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" is a tragic drama. Here we meet Macbeth, a Scottish lord who is told by three witches that he would one day rule over his country as king. As his wife, Lady Macbeth, urges him on, Macbeth kills King Duncan and usurps the throne to fulfill his ambitions. Macbeth's growing ruthlessness and tyranny push away friends and family and make enemies of everybody in his path. Unchecked ambition and guilt may have disastrous results, as explored in "Macbeth." Shakespeare examines issues of destiny and free choice, the corrupting impact of power, and the evil that may lie inside the human spirit via the character of Macbeth and the events of the play. The play remains one of Shakespeare's most popular and frequently-performed works and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of English literature.
