As you watch this powerful production of The Darkest Part of the Night, you’ll delve into the turbulent and painful past of Shirley and Dwight, siblings who grew up in Chapeltown Leeds in the 1980s. While they had to put up with rampant racism, police violence, and poverty – it wasn’t just their environment that made life difficult. Dwight was learning what it really meant to be an autistic Black man in the world and Shirley struggled to balance unrealistic expectations at home, school, and everywhere else. Every day was a fight for survival. Now, back home at the funeral of their mother, the siblings have to face their memories together if they want to overcome their past and try to move on. Written by Zodwa Nyoni, directed by Nancy Medina, and with a brilliant cast and crew behind this heartfelt drama – this is theatre that shows us how to move past a fractured past and relationships and the true meaning of love.
