We really enjoyed this little cruise on the Mississippi. The paddlewheel boat took us back to our childhood, and we spent the whole time thinking about Tom Sawyer :)

Boat and views. Food not great quality and way way too salty. Next time will eat nearby and just do the sightseeing from the paddlewheel.

I enjoyed the narrator. Great job! The cruise began on time. Love the cocktail and snacks. I'm in New Orleans for a conference. Had a break and decided to cruise on the "Natchez". The jazz was very smooth. Never been to New Orleans. What a great experience.

We had a fantastic time. Our son plays in the high school jazz band and really enjoyed listening to the live music. The food was great at lunch, especially the bread pudding (5 stars itself)! I could have sat and listened to the paddle wheel for the whole trip it was so relaxing. Aside from the rain it was a perfect steamboat cruise.

The lunch was tasty and hot (I hate food served cold). The tour narrator over the loud-speaker was clear and understandable. There was plenty of seating for all, and the upper deck was open, but a canvas covering protected from the sun. However, we found a table and chairs at the rear of the boat, with a good view and out of the wind. The Jazz Band was great, but didn't play as long as I would have liked. The attached pic gives you and idea of the view from where we sat.

What you get with Steamboat Natchez cruises in New Orleans

Steamboat Natchez runs authentic steam-powered paddlewheel cruises from the Toulouse Street Wharf on the Mississippi River, right by the French Quarter. Unlike diesel-powered riverboats, it uses a working 1920s-era steam engine and calliope, making it the last true steamboat operating in New Orleans. This heritage setup shapes the experience: you can watch the engine in motion, hear the steam whistle, and listen to live jazz as you cruise. So you’re not just taking a boat ride; you’re experiencing living river history in a relaxed, entertainment-focused format.

Steamboat Natchez overview

  • Operator identity: Steamboat Natchez is a three‑deck, authentic steam‑powered paddlewheeler and the last traditional steamboat operating in New Orleans.

  • Cruise formats offered: Sightseeing Jazz Cruise (daytime and evening), Jazz Cruise with Lunch, Sunday Jazz Cruise with Brunch, and Evening Jazz Cruise with Dinner.

  • Duration range: Core cruises run about 2 hours dock‑to‑dock; select express sightseeing options can be as short as 75 minutes.

  • Departure point(s): All Steamboat Natchez cruises depart from Toulouse Street Wharf on the Mississippi River, at the edge of the French Quarter.

  • Key inclusions vs upgrades: Every cruise includes access to all public decks, live jazz, captain’s narration (more prominent by day), and engine‑room viewing; buffet meals and certain drink packages are upgrade add‑ons.

  • Entertainment/programming: Live jazz bands perform on all main sailings, with narration emphasized on daytime cruises and continuous music taking priority on brunch and dinner departures.

  • Good fit for: Travelers wanting a classic New Orleans river experience with live music, flexible meal options, and a choice between educational daytime outings and more atmospheric evening sailings.

  • Less suited for: Visitors seeking gourmet, fine‑dining food quality, a quiet small‑boat tour, or hop‑on hop‑off style transport rather than a fixed‑route round‑trip cruise.

Know before you book an Steamboat Natchez cruise

  • All guests, including online bookers, must collect a physical boarding pass at the Toulouse Street Wharf ticket office; there is no true skip‑the‑line or priority boarding option.

  • Arrive 30–45 minutes before departure to handle ticket pickup, photo and bag check; boarding typically closes about 10 minutes before sailing and late arrivals are not accommodated.

  • Ticket types are split between cruise‑only and meal‑inclusive options; adding lunch, brunch, or dinner mainly affects dining room access and seating, not the route, narration, or jazz program.

  • Dinner and brunch buffets are fixed‑menu, communal setups; travelers with strict dietary needs should review current menus and notify the operator in advance rather than assuming extensive special‑order options.

  • Seating on decks is first‑come, first‑served and general admission; only dining tables during buffet service are reserved, so arrive early if you need shade, specific views, or to sit together.

  • The historic Steamboat Natchez may occasionally be substituted with the diesel Riverboat City of New Orleans during maintenance; check the operator’s schedule if a true steam‑powered vessel is important to you.

  • Cruises operate rain or shine and much of the experience is outdoors; pack layers, sun protection, or rain gear accordingly, as weather discomfort is not grounds for routine refunds or free rescheduling.

Which Steamboat Natchez cruise fits your plans?

Daytime sightseeing jazz cruise (no meal)

This feels like a relaxed, history‑forward river outing where the boat, narration, and live jazz are the main event. The crowd skews mixed: families, seniors, and first‑timers who want to see New Orleans from the water without structuring their day around a meal. It works best if you care about daylight views, hearing the captain’s commentary, and having freedom to roam between decks and the engine room. It’s also easier with young kids or anyone who tires in the evening. The trade-off: you’ll need to sort out food before or after and seats are first‑come, so it suits planners who are comfortable building their own meal stop around the cruise.

Daytime jazz cruise with lunch

This format feels like a floating casual restaurant layered onto the regular sightseeing cruise. You’ll see a mix of couples, small groups, and tour parties who like having a reserved base indoors and a guaranteed Creole lunch without hunting for a separate spot to eat. It works well in the hotter months when a stretch in the shaded dining room breaks up time in the sun, or on tightly planned days when “lunch plus activity in one go” is appealing. The trade-off: time at the buffet and chatting at your table means you’re likely to miss some narration and outdoor views, and the food is hearty rather than restaurant‑level.

Sunday jazz brunch cruise

This has the feel of a Sunday social event that just happens to be on the Mississippi: lively, talkative, and focused on brunch favorites and mimosas as much as the scenery. Typical guests are friend groups, multigenerational families, and weekend visitors looking for a distinctly New Orleans way to spend late morning. It works best if you enjoy buffet brunch culture, want a daytime activity that doesn’t start too early, and like the idea of continuous jazz as a backdrop. The limitation is flexibility: it’s Sundays only and can be noisy, so it’s not ideal if you’re mainly after quiet historical commentary or aren’t into brunch-style dining.

Evening jazz dinner cruise

This feels like a classic “night out” on the river, with a stronger sense of occasion than the daytime trips. The audience leans toward couples, small celebration groups, and travelers who want city lights, table service, and steady live jazz in one package. It works best if you prefer cooler evening temperatures, want a guaranteed indoor seat for part of the night, and like the idea of not arranging separate dinner reservations. The trade-off is emphasis: you’ll spend a significant slice of the cruise in the dining room and the meal is buffet-style rather than fine dining, so book it for an easy, atmospheric evening rather than for culinary bragging rights.

The Steamboat Natchez fleet

Steamboat Natchez (steam-powered paddlewheeler)

Steamboat Natchez is a three-deck sternwheel steamboat with mostly open-sided decks and covered seating areas, plus an enclosed, climate-controlled main salon. Capacity is around 1,200 passengers, so expect busy but walkable spaces. Guests can move freely between shaded railings, indoor seating near the jazz stage, and the engine-room viewing area. The working steam engine and calliope create noticeable mechanical noise throughout the cruise.

Riverboat City of New Orleans (diesel-powered paddlewheeler – substitute vessel)

Riverboat City of New Orleans is a multi-deck, diesel-powered paddlewheeler with more modern interiors and a similar overall capacity. Layout emphasizes enclosed, air-conditioned salons with large windows and open upper decks for viewing. Noise comes mainly from crowd and PA system rather than a steam engine. Views and movement patterns (indoor to outdoor decks) feel similar to the Natchez, but without an engine-room attraction or live steam calliope.

What happens on a Steamboat Natchez cruise?

A view of busy boarding at the wharf during a steamboat cruise

Boarding at Toulouse Street Wharf (30–45 minutes before departure)

Arrive at Toulouse Street Wharf in the French Quarter to exchange your voucher for a boarding pass, then join the line along the riverfront. As you wait, the steam calliope starts playing overhead. Once boarding opens, crew scan tickets at the gangway and you choose seats on the open or enclosed decks.

Steamboat departing with French Quarter in view

Departure and first views of the French Quarter

As the paddlewheel starts turning, the boat eases away from the wharf. From the upper deck railings you see Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, and the Pontalba Buildings slide past on the East Bank, with the Crescent City Connection Bridge framing the skyline behind. Inside, the jazz band begins its first set while the captain starts light narration.

View of river landmarks during cruise

Downriver leg and mid‑route landmarks

Cruising downriver, narration points out Woldenberg Park and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas off the port side before the city thins out. Further along you pass Algiers Point on the West Bank, then industrial stretches including the Port of New Orleans and the Domino Sugar Refinery, typically viewed best from the side rails on the lower and upper decks.

Steamboat making a turn with skyline in view

Turn at Chalmette and return to New Orleans skyline

Near Chalmette Battlefield, the captain identifies the battlefield and Chalmette Monument across the levee before the boat makes a wide U‑turn mid‑river. On the upstream leg, narration usually yields to continuous jazz. Passengers move between decks, visiting the open engine‑room gallery, before re‑emerging to watch the New Orleans skyline reappear ahead.

Disembarkation at the wharf with iconic views

Approach to the wharf and disembarkation

On the final approach, views of Jackson Square and the French Quarter return from the opposite angle, with the Crescent City Connection and downtown towers in the background. Crew announce docking and ask guests to clear stairways. Once secured, passengers file off the gangway back onto Toulouse Street Wharf, steps from the French Quarter streets.

Where to board Steamboat Natchez in New Orleans

Toulouse Street Wharf (Steamboat Natchez dock)

[MAP EMBED HERE]

Used for:
All Steamboat Natchez daytime sightseeing jazz cruises, Sunday jazz brunch cruises, and evening jazz dinner and cruise-only sailings.

Address:
Toulouse Street Wharf, 400 Toulouse St, New Orleans, LA 70130. The dock is on the Mississippi River side of the French Quarter, near Jackson Square.

How to get there:
From the French Quarter, it’s an easy 5–10 minute walk down Toulouse Street toward the river; follow signs for “Steamboat Natchez” and “Gray Line Lighthouse Ticket Office.” Streetcar riders can use the Riverfront line to the Dumaine or Toulouse stops, then walk along the riverfront. Rideshares and taxis typically drop on Decatur Street; from there, walk through the riverfront plaza toward the lighthouse-shaped ticket office.

When to arrive:
Arrive 45 minutes before departure to allow time to exchange your voucher for a boarding pass at the lighthouse ticket office and then clear the photo and bag-check queue. Lines can reach 15–30 minutes at busy times, and boarding usually closes about 10 minutes before sailing.

Good to know:
Even with an online or OTA ticket, you must collect a physical boarding ticket at the Toulouse Street Wharf ticket office; there is no true skip-the-line option, and all guests use the same ticket and boarding process.

Plan your Steamboat Natchez cruise in New Orleans

Check-in and boarding (60–80 words)

Arrive 45 minutes before departure (daytime, brunch, and dinner) to allow for ticket pickup and boarding. First, go to the Toulouse Street Wharf ticket office to exchange your voucher or online confirmation for a physical boarding pass. Next, join the boarding line for security and the optional souvenir photo. Boarding usually begins 30 minutes before sailing; seating is first-come except for reserved dining tables. Once on board, you’re free to choose any open deck area.

Frequently asked questions about Steamboat Natchez cruises

  • The difference is mainly vessel type and route. Steamboat Natchez is the only authentic steam-powered boat, with a working engine room and steam calliope. Creole Queen and Riverboat City of New Orleans are diesel-powered paddlewheelers offering similar jazz/dining formats, but with slightly different routes and more modern interiors.

  • Book the daytime Sightseeing Jazz Cruise if you want maximum narration, clearer views, and the lowest price. Book the Sunday Jazz Cruise with Brunch if you’re in town on Sunday and want a festive meal-focused outing. Book the Evening Jazz Cruise with Dinner for a packaged “night out” combining dinner, live jazz, and city lights.

  • The difference is whether a meal is bundled. Sightseeing Jazz Cruises (day or evening) include the 2‑hour cruise, live jazz, and narration, but no food or drinks. Lunch, brunch, and dinner options add a reserved dining table, buffet-style Creole cuisine, and coffee/tea; alcoholic drinks and bar snacks are always extra.

  • You board at Toulouse Street Wharf at the edge of the French Quarter. You should arrive 30–45 minutes before departure because all guests must first exchange vouchers for boarding passes, then clear the photo/security line. Boarding generally closes about 10 minutes before sailing, and late arrivals can be turned away.

  • You don’t have to dress formally. Daytime and brunch cruises are casual—shorts and T‑shirts are common, as long as they’re neat. For the evening dinner cruise, smart-casual is usual (collared shirts, sundresses); very beachy clothing and swimwear are out of place but not policed by a strict code.

  • The cruises operate rain or shine in most conditions. You don’t get a refund just because it’s hot, cold, or raining, but sailings cancelled for safety or operational reasons are typically refunded or rebooked. In poor weather, you’ll spend more time in the enclosed salons, which can feel crowded on full departures.

  • You don’t have to book in advance, but it’s strongly recommended. Popular departures—especially Friday–Sunday evenings and the Sunday Jazz Brunch—often sell out a day or more ahead in high season. Walk‑up tickets are sometimes available on quieter weekdays or hot summer afternoons but are never guaranteed.

  • No, there is currently no true skip‑the‑line product. All guests, regardless of where or how they booked, must queue at the ticket office for boarding passes and then join the same boarding line. Paying more for a meal or combo does not change this process; arriving earlier is the only real way to reduce waiting.
