Did you know?

With 5 floors, 1200 rooms, a museum, library and theatre, it is the largest royal residence in the world by volume. The gardens alone extend beyond 11 acres.

The Royal Palace of Caserta was the chosen spot where the Germans signed their unconditional surrender at the end of World War 2. This guaranteed the permanent removal of German and Italian fascist troops.

In 1943, precious canvases within the Palatine Chapel were destroyed by the bombing during WW2. Some standing columns still bear evidence to this fateful episode.

From 1923 to 1943, the Royal Palace was also home to Italia Aeronautica, the Italian Airforce Academy.

The Royal Palace was also a preferred choice as a movie set, with films like Mission Impossible and Angels & Demons, etc. being shot on its premises. Two movies from the Star wars franchise (The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones) was also taken here.

The Royal Park

Spanning 3km in length and featuring 60 statues, the Royal Park is 100 hectares in area and houses 6 monumental fountains. Its lifeblood is the Caroline Aqueduct, feeding its complex system of pools and fountains. The Royal Park itself has plenty to see inside, including the Boschia Vecchio (which is the oldest portion of the Park), the waterfall that distributes the water from the Caroline Aqueduct and more.

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace of Caserta has a total of 1200 rooms placed across 5 floors, including 12 state apartments, a library, and a theatre that was modelled after Teatro San Carlo of Naples. A masterpiece of Baroque architecture, the palace follows a symmetrical layout. It showcases grand staircases, soaring ceilings, and intricate decorations.

The Palatine Chapel

Built within the Palace, the chapel was Vanvitelli's personal challenge to one-up the church in Versailles which he deemed as 'bad, disproportionate in everything”. To this end, no expense was spared to decorate the 'house of god', with the finest marbles sourced from Naples and Sicily. This gives the Palatine Chapel a polychromatic finish, with its gold ceilings and multi-hued marble floor.

The English Gardens

Occupying an area of 23 hectares, the English Garden is the first example of an informal garden in Italy. The garden is home to rare and exotic plants that were imported from around the world (totaling 224 species). Apart from the plants, this garden also houses several lakes, temples, four greenhouses, an English mansion, a bee house, 24 sculptures and other elements.

The Caroline Aqueduct

The Caroline Aqueduct is an engineering marvel designed by Luigi Vanvitelli. It was designed to supply the Palace, gardens, fountains, the upcoming city of Caserta, and the nearby mills and agricultural lands with water. The construction of this structure was one of the most important public works done by the Bourbons.

San Silvestro Wood

Extending for 76 hectares behind the Royal Park, these woods were bought and cultivated by King Charles of Bourbon. It was used for hunting, cultivating olive trees and vineyards, breeding cattle and producing cheese. Within, there is an 8 hectare rectangular vineyard called San Silvestro’s Oasis. Today, it is funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is wonderful! Walter, our knowledgeable and friendly guide, showed us around the palace: the Royal Staircase, the chapel, and the theater. We were allowed to see these areas "in exchange" for a visit to the gardens, which (unfortunately) were closed due to bad weather and strong winds—trees had even fallen over. The site was so fast to access; I didn't even have to print out my ticket because all I had to do was show my digital ticket

The app is easy to use, but there were a few issues with the audio guide. Unfortunately, it wasn't updated to reflect which rooms were open to visitors and which weren't, so it was sometimes hard to tell which part of the palace it was referring to. Otherwise, the content was excellent and clearly explained.

The palace is easy to reach, and entry was straightforward. The staff at InStazione—the company behind the Naples site—were very friendly and helpful. You’ll be contacted via WhatsApp and phone call the day before the tour begins for confirmation. Train tickets and palace admission tickets are picked up at their “InStazione” information desk at Naples Central Station. I was a bit skeptical about this app due to mixed reviews online, but as far as my trip goes, it turned out fine.
