Just as the Caminito del Rey was a travel destination last year, Sintra was on our list this year. We were advised against going with our own transport. The mayor, as we understood from our Uber driver, wants to keep all vehicles out of his village. Except those of the residents, of course. So, Uber? Yes, that turned out to be the most practical and ultimately the cheapest option. Especially if you get a driver who actually lives in Sintra. He immediately gave us tips on the best way to get from one side to the other, as we wanted to visit Pena Palace first and then Quinta da Regaleira, which is quite a bit further away. Sintra is special not only for its colorful palaces, castles, and romantic gardens, but also for its microclimate. It is much cooler and more humid here than in Lisbon. This microclimate is partly why kings, aristocrats, and wealthy foreigners built their country residences here over the centuries. In the 19th century, Sintra took on its current fairytale character. King Ferdinand II had a ruined monastery converted into the spectacular Pena Palace. A unique combination of various styles: Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance, and even Egyptian influences. Around the palace, he had a huge, romantic park laid out with exotic trees, ponds, fountains, and winding paths. Walking through this park, you feel like you are in a fairytale world. But then again... with all those tourists! 😉

At first apprehensive, I mustered the strength to travel alone via train from Lisbon to Sintra. By the end of the day, I made a new friend that I met in the Initiation Well in Quinta de Regaleiira! A truly enchanted place indeed! The lush nature and fantasy-like castle was breathtaking after being in the city-life of Lisbon. Pena Palace was also stunning, I enjoyed the view of the Atlantic Ocean, the city below, and the fresh air from the Queen's Terrace. I rode tuk tuks and walked, enjoying the fresh air. I wandered around the Seteais Palace and saw a hedge maze! I had pastry and croissant in the city center, then shared a taxi to Cascais with my new soul sister! We rode back to Lisbon together. This is a must do experience, I would like to do it again, with no phone (and add the Monserrate Palace & Park)! I felt like Queen for a day, mi castle, tu castle!!! Highly recommend and would so again!

Getting to Sintra from Lisbon by train was very easy, taking just 40 minutes. There is an option to buy hop-on hop-off bus tickets that are valid all day in Sintra and take you to all the surrounding sights; they cost about 10 Euros per person. The Pena Palace is beautiful, featuring a blend of multiple cultures and eras, and it also offers a free audio guide option to learn about the history of the place—make sure to bring headphones. Afterwards, we took the bus back to Sintra and caught another bus to Quinta da Regaleira, which is huge. Filled with nature and stories to discover, it features majestic landscapes, tunnels to explore, wonderful grottoes, and viewpoints. We recommend spending at least 2 hours there to explore each spot. You can't leave Portugal without seeing this!

It is a very beautiful place and highly recommended. It is well worth visiting and enjoying its landscapes and monuments. Be prepared to walk a lot, though, so wearing comfortable shoes is essential. I recommend taking the bus up to the site, especially since the path is quite steep. If you walk up, you will probably arrive more tired and use up energy that you will need later to explore Quinta da Regaleira, where there is also a lot of walking. ⚠️ A very important tip: buy your tickets in advance. I do not recommend buying them directly at the venue, as there might not be availability for that day and you risk missing out on the visit. Planning and booking in advance will help you make much better use of your time.

I've been to many countries and many castles in Europe - this was by far the most unique and beautiful. Absolutely worth the medium hike up from the garden entrance to the palace. The inside was stunning but the outside was something out of a movie. I could not get enough pics. Just a note: you definitely need to take some form of transport up to the garden gates. Its like... way up the mountain and it takes a good 30 minutes even on a bus. We also loved the Regalia - prepare for some walking, its actually quite a large park with a few attractions within it which I was not expecting. its also about a 20 minute walk from the main Sintra square, up hill. We were hoofing it to make it to our slot on time from where we parked.

We had a truly memorable experience. The place carries an impressive mystical aura, with its lush gardens, secret tunnels, and buildings full of symbolism. The highlight was, without a doubt, the descent down the Initiation Well: that underground spiral makes you feel as if you were in a portal to another dimension, descending into the heart of the earth. Exploring the hidden passages, discovering the nooks and crannies between the stones, and sharing the fascination of every detail in good company made the day even more special. Seeing the palace was nice however be prepared for long lines and barley an opportunity to get a photo becaue there are so many people. We don't even get all the way to the castle on this trip because the cafe was closed and we couldn't hike anymore without getting water. It is beautiful however bring water, wear comfortable sneakers and be prepared to wait in long lines to get in and get on the bus

The actual palace was really interesting and very beautiful. The amount of time spent queuing outside and then again inside despite have pre booked tickets was disappointing and annoying. We felt overwhelmed by the crowds and felt there were too many people admitted at one time and this took the edge off the day.

The attraction may be crowded, so expect some waiting time, especially at the security checkpoint (15–20 minutes).

Your selected time slot is for entry to Pena Palace. Since it’s about a 30-minute walk from the park entrance to the palace, make sure to arrive early. Late arrivals may be denied entry.

Please use the house tour entrance instead of the main gate.

Private vehicles are not permitted, so visitors should use pedestrian trails or public transport.

About 30 km from Lisbon, Pena Palace sits in Sintra, where parking is available in the historic center or outer lots, though spaces can be limited.

The shuttle service covers round-trip transfers between the park entrance and Pena Palace.

Reduced tickets for children aged 6-18 and seniors aged 65 and above are available onsite.

Quinta da Regaleira

If you can, avoid driving into Sintra; the streets are narrow, parking is limited, and traffic can be challenging, especially in peak season.

Should you drive, park in Sintra town center and enjoy the 30-minute scenic walk to Quinta da Regaleira. Public transport is your best bet to get to Quinta stress-free.
