Our trip to Quinta da Regaleira was surprising. Everything seemed poised to go wrong, as the weather suddenly changed, the temperature dropped, and the threat of rain became evident. When we arrived, we couldn’t park near the site; the car was more than two kilometers away, so we didn’t get in until 45 minutes after our scheduled time. However, what seemed like chaos turned into a five-star experience. The temperature stayed around 23 degrees; there were two brief showers that actually made the walk to the estate more pleasant. The fact that the car was parked far away allowed us to admire other areas we wouldn’t otherwise have seen. The staff at the farm’s entrance put us at ease, and we were admitted right after our scheduled time, allowing us to enjoy our visit as planned. The views are spectacular, the details superb. There are tunnels, mazes, and incredible views that transport us to another time—in short, a dream! For visitors, it’s important to wear very comfortable shoes and bring a camera with a fully charged battery, as there are so many details to capture and so many photos to take.

The Palácio da Pena and Quinta Regaleira are very beautiful. The Palácio da Pena is way too crowded, and I didn’t expect that visiting the inside of the palace (4 or 5 rooms) would mean spending the whoooole time in line—from the moment you enter until you leave— but it’s still worth visiting since the palace ticket gives you access to the terraces (which, of course, are still very crowded). I liked Quinta Regaleira better—it’s quieter and more spacious. You can explore the interior rooms at a more leisurely pace without waiting in line. At the Initiation Well, the attendant was rushing people along to keep the line moving and not let them stop to take pictures inside, which I didn’t like, because obviously people want to take photos, but you can still manage to get some shots. I liked Quinta Regaleira better than Palácio da Pena—both are very beautiful.

The line was extremely long just to get onto the castle grounds (even with a ticket). There were also several (!) long (!) wait times inside the castle. Because of the wait times, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend the castle. Ultimately, it’s a colorful castle with five pretty rooms. What I can definitely recommend, however, is the park itself. Due to a lack of time, I was probably only able to see about a third of the park. The many paths, buildings, streams, and ponds you can discover there are extraordinary!! If I were to go back there with a group of friends, I’d say: “You guys go check out the castle; I’ll take a look at the park :-)”

We really enjoyed visiting Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra. It is such a beautiful and unique place, with lovely gardens, interesting architecture, winding paths, and hidden tunnels to explore. The Initiation Well was definitely a highlight and something we had never seen before. We enjoyed walking around the property and discovering all the different areas along the way. It has a very peaceful feel in some areas, while others are fun to explore and a little mysterious. We would definitely recommend visiting if you are in Sintra. Give yourself plenty of time to walk around and take it all in—it’s a beautiful place and well worth the visit!

It was simply a fantastic day—we loved this tour! Here’s a valuable tip to make the most of your day: be sure to visit the Pena Palace in the morning (the best time to avoid the crowds and the heat). Save the Quinta da Regaleira for the afternoon, and start your tour right away with the must-see Initiation Well (the “hole”) as soon as you arrive to avoid the line. A perfect combination of magnificent scenery and smooth logistics with these tickets!

I thought it was great how easy it was to buy the tickets and then see them appear in the app. The Pena Palace and the Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra are must-see attractions if you’re visiting the Lisbon area. If you take bus 435 to the Quinta and bus 434 to the Pena Palace, remember to be at the bus stop well in advance, since they can come very frequently—or you might end up waiting at the stop for 30 minutes. We arrived late relative to our ticket purchase time, but they didn’t give us any trouble getting in.
    • Discover two of Sintra’s most enchanting UNESCO World Heritage sites with one easy combo ticket.

    • Explore Pena Palace, a vibrant 19th-century Romanticist castle with lush gardens, luxe royal apartments, and panoramic Queen’s Terrace.

Both palaces and their gardens are truly marvelous. We especially liked the Regaleira Palace much better, with its caves, fountains, and the spectacular inverted well. As for the Pena Palace, it was a cloudy and foggy day, and the scenery wasn’t as striking as it would have been under clear skies. What I liked least was the massive crowd at the Pena Palace—it was a real shame. It was like lice in a seam. We didn’t enjoy it as much as we did the Regaleira Palace.

This is a truly enchanting place—so much so that a week after my visit, I dreamed of a magical spot where a mermaid was swimming among moss-covered towers in the middle of the mountains... It’s worth a visit—a unique place that’s far too little-known given just how beautiful it is. I recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the crowds🍀🐌🐞🌼🌲

It's really nice, but it's true that it has lost some of the charm it had years ago when there were fewer people. The initiation well used to be more mysterious, both at its entrance and along the many passageways leading to it. I imagine they've removed all that now because of the crowds. Plus, it's much more expensive now than it used to be. Still, it’s great and a good experience. It’s worth it.
