Why head out with Headout

Pro tips to help you make a pick

Standard admission is the base ticket and includes the current 360° panorama, the central viewing platform, and the themed exhibition. Live guiding, transport, food and drinks, and any audio guide are not included unless your seller explicitly lists them.

Buy online if you’re visiting on weekends, holidays, or rainy days. Online tickets can help you bypass the on-site ticket purchase line, but all visitors still go through entry control.

Choose an admission + public guided tour only if the extra context matters to you and you’re comfortable with German. Public guided tours are mainly in German, while other languages are usually arranged for groups.

Compare a standalone ticket with any Dresden city card or combo only if you plan several paid sights in 1–3 days. Panometer inclusion can vary, so confirm the current partner list before relying on a pass.

Check the current panorama theme before booking. Only one main panorama is on display at a time, so past favorites such as DRESDEN 1945 may not be the current exhibition.

Plan around 1.5–2 hours onsite and avoid arriving too close to closing. A rushed visit can mean seeing just one light cycle and only part of the exhibition.

For quieter platform access and easier photos, aim for a weekday morning or late-afternoon visit rather than weekend midday, when the central platform can feel more crowded.

If stairs are an issue, contact Panometer before booking. Ground-level access appears easier, but the higher viewing decks are mainly reached by stairs and lift details are not clearly documented.

About Panometer

Panometer Dresden centers on one enormous 360° image rather than a sequence of separate galleries. Artist Yadegar Asisi uses a converted gasometer, a central viewing tower, and a timed sound-and-light cycle to create changing perspectives on the same scene. The surrounding exhibition adds photographs, maps, models, and films that explain the panorama’s subject in more detail.

Did you know?

“Panometer” is a portmanteau of “panorama” and “gasometer,” coined by Yadegar Asisi for these converted industrial spaces.

The panorama image is printed on large fabric strips that together reach up to around 27–30 meters in height and form a complete 360° cylinder.

Only one main panorama is shown at a time. Past Dresden themes have included “DRESDEN 1945” and “BAROQUE DRESDEN.”

A full lighting transition through the panorama often takes about 15–20 minutes, so the same image changes noticeably if you stay for a complete cycle.

Panometer Dresden is part of a small network of Asisi panorama projects that also includes Panometer Leipzig and the Pergamon Panorama in Berlin.

Why visit Panometer?

360° Panorama Inside a Former Gasometer

Panometer Dresden places Yadegar Asisi’s panorama inside a converted gas storage tank, so the image surrounds you floor to ceiling. The dimmed circular hall creates a single continuous scene rather than separate framed works, giving the visit a very different rhythm from a conventional museum gallery.

Multi-Level Views from the Central Platform

A central viewing platform rises through the panorama hall and lets you look across the scene from several heights. Lower levels bring out smaller details, while higher decks reveal the overall composition and spatial layout. Visitor reports note that the upper levels are mainly reached by stairs.

Day-to-Night Light and Sound Cycle

The panorama changes with an atmospheric light and sound program that simulates different times of day. A full cycle often takes about 15–20 minutes, so staying through at least one complete sequence reveals details that disappear and reappear as the light shifts.

Context from Photos, Models, and Films

The visit is not only visual spectacle. The themed exhibition around the panorama includes photographs, models, films, maps, and timelines that explain the historical or environmental background of the current subject. Depending on the theme, you may also see eyewitness accounts or scientific material.

Hidden Stories Within Asisi’s Panorama

Asisi’s image is designed for slow looking, with small figures, events, and visual references embedded across the scene. Staff or exhibition panels sometimes point out details to search for, and some visitors use magnifying glasses or binoculars when these are available or encouraged.
