Thoroughly enjoyed the National Palace in Sintra. The free audio and displays were easy to access and very enjoyable. Stimulated our own further reading especially around Phillipa of Lancaster seeing as we are from Lancaster UK. The Routes around both Palaces were planned out well, we were glad to avoid a large tour group with our own audio. We took a Bolt taxi to Pena palace from the other side of the village. We walked back via the Moor castle. The path was clear had new huge steps on much of the first area near Pena. Thankfully it was all downhill. Arrive in time to view the Moor castle as you have to leave by 6pm. The castle itself is very step. Do note: sadly none of the castles considered disabled access, although Pena had a bus for €4.10 to get up from the entrance to the castle archway. However there was a steep ramp up inside through the tunnel to the first courtyard on cobbles and lots of stairs inside.

At first apprehensive, I mustered the strength to travel alone via train from Lisbon to Sintra. By the end of the day, I made a new friend that I met in the Initiation Well in Quinta de Regaleiira! A truly enchanted place indeed! The lush nature and fantasy-like castle was breathtaking after being in the city-life of Lisbon. Pena Palace was also stunning, I enjoyed the view of the Atlantic Ocean, the city below, and the fresh air from the Queen's Terrace. I rode tuk tuks and walked, enjoying the fresh air. I wandered around the Seteais Palace and saw a hedge maze! I had pastry and croissant in the city center, then shared a taxi to Cascais with my new soul sister! We rode back to Lisbon together. This is a must do experience, I would like to do it again, with no phone (and add the Monserrate Palace & Park)! I felt like Queen for a day, mi castle, tu castle!!! Highly recommend and would so again!

Getting to Sintra from Lisbon by train was very easy, taking just 40 minutes. There is an option to buy hop-on hop-off bus tickets that are valid all day in Sintra and take you to all the surrounding sights; they cost about 10 Euros per person. The Pena Palace is beautiful, featuring a blend of multiple cultures and eras, and it also offers a free audio guide option to learn about the history of the place—make sure to bring headphones. Afterwards, we took the bus back to Sintra and caught another bus to Quinta da Regaleira, which is huge. Filled with nature and stories to discover, it features majestic landscapes, tunnels to explore, wonderful grottoes, and viewpoints. We recommend spending at least 2 hours there to explore each spot. You can't leave Portugal without seeing this!

Quinta da Regaleira was one of the most evocative experiences of our trip to Portugal. A truly unique place where the palace, gardens, caves, underground passages, and initiation wells intertwine to create an almost magical atmosphere. The part that impressed us the most is definitely the garden: it's not your classic palace visit, but a real exploration, with hidden corners and completely different landscapes as you move along. The Initiation Well is spectacular and absolutely worth the visit. I recommend dedicating at least 2-3 hours to the visit, wearing comfortable shoes because there are several paths, staircases, and passages to cover. A fascinating, original, and out-of-the-ordinary place that definitely deserves to be included in your Sintra itinerary.

It is a very beautiful place and highly recommended. It is well worth visiting and enjoying its landscapes and monuments. Be prepared to walk a lot, though, so wearing comfortable shoes is essential. I recommend taking the bus up to the site, especially since the path is quite steep. If you walk up, you will probably arrive more tired and use up energy that you will need later to explore Quinta da Regaleira, where there is also a lot of walking. ⚠️ A very important tip: buy your tickets in advance. I do not recommend buying them directly at the venue, as there might not be availability for that day and you risk missing out on the visit. Planning and booking in advance will help you make much better use of your time.

We had a truly memorable experience. The place carries an impressive mystical aura, with its lush gardens, secret tunnels, and buildings full of symbolism. The highlight was, without a doubt, the descent down the Initiation Well: that underground spiral makes you feel as if you were in a portal to another dimension, descending into the heart of the earth. Exploring the hidden passages, discovering the nooks and crannies between the stones, and sharing the fascination of every detail in good company made the day even more special. It was an incredible journey, surrounded by mystery, history, and a unique energy that stayed with us from start to finish. A simply wonderful and unforgettable visit

National Palace of Sintra

The National Palace of Sintra served as a residence for almost every Portuguese king and queen till the end of the monarchy in 1910. The first thing you’ll notice from a distance is its two conical chimneys and rooms, culminating centuries of Moorish and Portuguese history. The tour will take you through some of its most iconic rooms, including the Swan Hall, the Magpie Room, the Palatine Chapel, and the Heraldic Hall with its octagonal dome. Each space features intricate details from a variety of different influences.

Quinta de Regaleira

The Quinta de Regaleira was built in the 20th century by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Brazilian businessman. Walking through each floor, you’ll come across a mix of Gothic, Rainnaisance, and Manueline styles. A stroll through the gardens will lead you to an underground network of tunnels and an initiation well. Every corner is dotted with symbolism, and the tunnels also lead to a secret entrance that leads to the Initiation Well.
