Why Watch Three Sisters
Why Watch Three Sisters
For the first time ever at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Chekhov’s Three Sisters makes its grand entrance—an exquisite dive into family drama, tangled love, and the messy business of being human. Don’t miss the world premiere of this fresh translation by playwright Rory Mullarkey, where old Russia meets new brilliance.
The Story
Ranked amongst other legendary plays such as The Cherry Orchard and The Seagull by Chekhov, the play explores the lives of Olga, Masha, and Irina - 3 sisters who live in the Prozorov family home. Olga, the oldest, is a school teacher, and Masha is a rather moody person who spends her time lounging on the couch and keeping her foolish husband at arm’s length. Irina is the youngest of them all; filled with hope about what the future holds for her. The sisters find themselves caught in murky love affairs and unexpected predicaments. The characters are expertly developed, as the memories of the past shape how the protagonists interact with each other and those around them.
Critics Reviews
Directed with a surprisingly fluid mixture of delicacy and bold, almost stylized expressionism, Lev Dodin’s production is marked by emotionally vibrant, precisely detailed performances in virtually all of the significant roles.
