The play tells a fictionalized story of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes who go through a terrible loss, the death of their son Hamnet.

  • Hamnet is a critically acclaimed new version of Maggie O'Farrell's best-selling book and is presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Shakespeare's imagined life, as well as the woman and family who affected his writing, are revealed in this captivating new stage production of Hamnet. The greatest writer of the English language, William Shakespeare, is revealed to have a family in this brand-new drama. Hamnet is a love letter to ardour, maternity, loss, and the wonder of nature. Madeleine Mantock (Blithe Spirit, West End) plays Agnes Hathaway in the adaptation, which was adapted for the stage by award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi) based on Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning book of the same name. The play is being directed by Erica Whyman and will be performed at the Garrick Theatre in London from September 30, 2023, until January 6, 2024. Grab your Hamnet London tickets now!

    The Story

Hamnet is the story about a couple in Stratford who have three children, twins Hamnet and Judith, and daughter Susanna. Plague takes the life of young Hamnet in 1596, aged eleven. The couple both deal with this terrible loss in their own way. Roughly four years later, William Shakespeare, the boy's father writes the play Hamlet (a name that is interchangeable at the time with name Hamnet).
