The Lello Library, or Livraria Lello as it is called in Portuguese, is a well-known bookshop in the city of Porto. Founded in 1906 by brothers José and António Lello, it is one of Portugal's oldest bookshops. The great wooden staircase, stained-glass windows, and ornate embellishments on the ceiling and walls give the bookshop its distinctive neo-Gothic architecture. Several writers, including J.K. Rowling, who formerly lived in Porto and frequented the bookshop, have been inspired by its beauty and have written about it. Besides the building's original landmarks stand new artworks and exhibits that further the institution's stated goal of elevating the status of books and writers. Hence, there are a plethora of attractions at the World's Prettiest Bookstore.
The Lello Library is more than simply a museum; it's also a fully functional bookshop with an extensive collection of books from all over the world, not only Portugal. The bookshop often features cultural events including poetry readings, live music, and book signings. Lello Library is a popular destination, thus it is not unusual for it to be crowded at times. If you want to avoid crowds, coming early in the morning or late at night is your best bet. Please note that in order to access the bookshop, customers must first buy a ticket, the price of which will be credited against the customer's next book purchase. Take your time perusing the shelves and marvel at the bookstore's spectacular architecture and interior design. Instead of rushing through it, take your time and take in the setting.
