Travel guides and tips

  • The most famous landmarks in Barcelona are Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Mila, Camp Nou, Casa Batllo, Casa Vicens, Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, and Barcelona Cathedral. Here's a little more about the top four landmarks:
    • Sagrada Familia: Antoni Gaudi's most famous -- and celebrated -- work, the Sagrada Familia is a truly majestic, still unfinished basilica in Barcelona. It oozes Gothic architecture with its imposing spires and is said to be almost at the end of its completion -- almost 100 years after Gaudi last laid his hands on it.
    • Park Guell: Another Gaudi masterpiece, Park Guell is the emblem of his naturalistic style of architecture. A massive park spread across 12 hectares, it includes Gaudi's famous mosaic structures, with unique rock formations, gardens, walkways, and more.
    • Camp Nou: Home to one of the most successful football clubs in the world, Camp Nou is the official stadium of FC Barcelona. Visit the stadium's ground and stands, and trophy room, and walk the halls that once echoed the footsteps of the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Maradona, and of course, Messi, at Camp Nou in Barcelona.
    • Casa Mila: One of Gaudi's underrated works that are often overshadowed by his other creations, Casa Mila is a striking building in central Barcelona. Its distinctive roof, courtyard, and tilework perfectly complement the unusual curved, beehive-reminiscent structure.
  • While there's no definitive answer on the oldest building, many consider the original version of Santa Maria del Pi to be the most historic, still standing landmark in Barcelona. According to historic texts, a small church was constructed during the year 987, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Further construction took place until it was opened officially in 1453. What one can see today is starkly different, with the rose window front facade, gothic arch, and the statue of Mary and Child.
One can also consider the historic Barcelona Cathedral to be co-own this title with the basilica since it is said to have been completed back in the 1480s. The Barcelona Cathedral is imposing with its spectacular Gothic towers and exterior facades, and beautiful stained glass windows, making it a must-visit while in the city.
  • The Sagrada Familia is the most-visited landmark in Barcelona, said to be drawing in about 5 million visitors during the pre-pandemic era. Its imposing towers, gothic design, stained glass windows and general striking architecture leave visitors stunned at a glance.
  • The top 5 landmarks not to be missed out on in Barcelona are:
    • Sagrada Familia
    • Park Guell
    • Casa Mila
    • Barcelona Cathedral
    • Camp Nou
  • Here are a few hidden gems in Barcelona that definitely warrant a visit:
    • Parc del Laberint: Considered to be the oldest park of its kind in Barcelona, the Parc del Laberint was designed sometime back in the 18th century. The main attraction here is the massive labyrinth that features large 2-meter high hedges along its edges. One can also see lovely Roman temples, statues, fountains, and more here.
    • Turo de La Rovira: One of the fascinating spots in the city, Turo de La Rovira is an abandoned anti-air defenses ground located atop a hill. Head here for some never-seen-before view of the city. Try to visit during sunrises or sunsets for a mesmerizing view.
    • Monestir de Pedralbes: The former home of the Poor Clares nun community, this stunning gothic monastery is today part nunnery part museum. One can see artwork by painters such as Rubens, Beato Angelico, and more.
    • Mercat de Sant Caterina: This underrated market is where you need to go to discover the authentic Catalan experience. It is home to a vast fruit and vegetable market, multiple food stalls, restaurants, and best of all, well-preserved archaeological remains that were uncovered during renovations.
    • Casa Vicens: The origin story of Antoni Gaudi's works, Casa Vicens is the first structure ever designed by the legendary architect. What one can see is an imaginative, surrealist version of a domestic apartment space, which incorporates his famous gothic and art nouveau influences.
  • The following top museums have free entry:
    • Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya: first Sunday of the month
    • Picasso Museum: first Sunday of the month
    • Museu d’Història de Barcelona: first Sunday of the month
    • Museu Marítim de Barcelona: every Sunday
  • There are several landmarks that offer free entry to visitors to Barcelona.
    • Get the best photo-worthy view from atop the Turo de La Rovira hilltop. For more picture-perfect views, head to Tibidabo Hill, or Montjuic Castle.
    • Explore ruins at the Temple of Augustus, Roman Necropolis, Roman Domus, and more.
    • Visit local markets that were once famous landmarks in the city, such as Mercat de Sant Caterina, Gracia, and Sant Andreu.
    • Explore Barcelona's churches and basilicas on free days. Though they charge a nominal fee during the week, at certain hours, landmarks such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, Cathedral of Saint Eulalia, Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi, and more offer free entry either on Sundays or early morning hours during the week.

I was really impressed. First of all, I was amazed at the stained glass and three-dimensional shapes of the ceiling. And the decorations around it were wonderful. It was wonderful that it is still used as a concert venue and I could feel the history. I was allowed to take many pictures. Now I want to go see a concert.

This was a huge highlight to my trip to Spain! Unfortunately, we waited until the last minute to purchase tickets and had a difficult time finding any. Headout came through with the most options and had tickets available more than any other vendor. We were able to purchase tickets at a very good price 2 days prior! The process was easy and quick. Will definitely use this company again. Gracias!

The tickets were easy to get and with a time slot. But keep in mind that traffic in Barcelona is often bad so keep that in mind.
