  • Auschwitz-Birkenau was established in 1940 and was the largest of the Nazi concentration and death camps. The Polish government has preserved the site in memory of the over 1.1 million people who died here during World War II and the Holocaust. A walk through this somber place will make you confront our history and acknowledge some of the most difficult lessons of our time.

To enter the museum, you walk through a gate with the inscription: “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work sets you free). Follow your expert guide inside to learn how the camp functioned on a day-to-day basis and how it affected post-war Europe. The museum encompasses the two largest camps of the Auschwitz complex, including approximately 150 buildings and 300 ruins. Prisoners lived in horrible conditions here, eating only about 700 kcal per day and forced to work beyond their physical capabilities. Walking through this place, you will witness the places and barracks these prisoners lived in. See the documents, gas chambers, pictures, and personal belongings of the prisoners and learn about one of the darkest periods in human history.
