London Hop-on Hop-off tours: At a glance

Swapping Tube changes for one simple ticket makes London sightseeing far easier: a Hop-on Hop-off tour is an open-top bus network with unlimited rides on set routes. Passes typically come as 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour options, reaching the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the London Eye, and St. Paul’s, with many operators bundling a Thames river cruise.

How it works: Choose a 24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour pass; once you board, you can hop-on hop-off freely until it expires.
What's included: Most tours include multiple routes, open-top seating, and multilingual audio guides, with selected passes adding a Thames river cruise or brief walking tour.
Flexibility: Ride a full loop or hop off whenever you like.
Operators: Operators include Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, and City Sightseeing.

Who should opt for a Hop-on Hop-off tour in London

Image representing First-time visitors

First-time visitors

Trying to string together Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, and Trafalgar Square with Tube changes and busy crossings can feel like a logistics puzzle. A Hop-on Hop-off pass joins these icons on clear routes, with multilingual audio guides and unlimited hops helping you grasp the city layout while you decide where to linger.

Image representing Solo travelers

Solo travelers

Crossing between Westminster, the City of London, and the West End alone means constantly checking maps, watching your bag, and guessing which bus to take. Hop-on Hop-off routes, with designated stops, onboard commentary, and apps that track live bus locations, let you move confidently while still feeling connected to what you are passing.

Image representing Budget travelers

Budget travelers

Covering distant areas like the British Museum, King’s Cross, and Oxford Street via separate Tube fares, buses, and paid tours can silently add up. A Hop-on Hop-off ticket folds transport and sightseeing into one pass, with 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour options and an included Thames section on many tickets reducing extra point-to-point costs.

Image representing Families

Families

Navigating the Underground with a buggy and tired kids between the Natural History Museum, Hyde Park, and SEA LIFE London Aquarium can quickly drain everyone’s energy. Step-free access on most Hop-on Hop-off buses, stroller-friendly boarding, kids’ audio channels, and frequent stops at these family hubs turn the journey itself into part of the day’s entertainment.

Image representing Time-strapped travelers

Art & history enthusiasts

Jumping between the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Victoria and Albert Museum on regular transport often means backtracking through busy interchanges instead of focusing on the stories. Hop-on Hop-off routes link these heritage sites directly, while detailed audio guides in multiple languages give context as you ride between eras.

The ideal Hop-on Hop-off pass duration for your London trip

24-hour/1-day pass

Best if you have just one full day in London or want an overview on arrival. You can comfortably do one complete loop plus 2–3 major stops, for example Westminster, Tower of London, and Trafalgar Square or Buckingham Palace. Expect a fairly packed schedule with shorter attraction visits. Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing, City Tour, and Topview all offer 24-hour or 1-day options. Many include a one-way Thames River cruise and sometimes guided walking tours or an evening panoramic tour.

48-hour/2-day pass

Well suited to weekend stays, families, or anyone who prefers not to rush. Two days let you split sightseeing: one day for Westminster, the City, and the Tower of London, and another for South Kensington museums, Harrods, or extra photo loops. Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing, City Tour, and Topview offer 48-hour passes. These often upgrade the Thames River cruise (for example to a round trip), add walking tours, night or evening bus tours, and are frequently used in attraction combos like the London Eye or SEA LIFE.

72-hour/3-day pass

Best if London is your main stop and you like to explore deeply at an easy pace. Three days mean you can treat the bus as a flexible shuttle: revisit favorite areas, fit in longer interior visits (Tower, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s), and still cover Kensington and riverside neighborhoods. Big Bus, Tootbus, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing, and City Tour provide 72-hour passes, typically with a Thames River cruise plus an evening or night tour and guided walking tours included.

Tips to make the most of your Hop-on Hop-off London tour

  • Start with a full loop : Board one of the first buses, stay on for the 2–2.5 hour circuit, and treat it as a moving preview. Drop map pins at must‑sees so you know exactly where to hop off later.

  • Cluster your route by neighbourhoods : Cluster your stops by area rather than chasing every landmark in order of excitement. When checking operator maps, favour routes covering your clusters: Westminster–Buckingham–Trafalgar, Tower–Tower Bridge–St Paul’s, and South Kensington museums–Harrods, so you avoid long, slow cross‑city rides.

  • Activate your hours strategically : Time your pass activation carefully. With a 24-hour ticket, starting around 11am often lets you ride through to late morning next day. On 48-hour/72-hour passes, pack big interior visits into day one, keeping day two lighter and more scenic.

  • Make combos and cruises do the heavy lifting : Look for selected tours that bundle Hop-on Hop-off with timed entries or a Thames cruise. Take the river segment around midday as a break, and book Tower of London or London Eye slots 60–90 minutes after your planned arrival.

  • Plan food stops beyond the nearest pub : For better food than the closest tourist pub, use stops near Borough Market, Covent Garden or Soho and walk a few minutes. Aim for slightly early or late lunches to dodge 1pm queues, then hop back on well‑fed and quicker.

  • Dress for top‑deck weather, not the forecast : London’s weather flips fast, so dress in layers, pack a waterproof and remember the top deck is windier than it looks. In winter, last buses around 4:30pm make mornings prime bus time and afternoons better for indoor sights.

  • Sync shopping and strolling with local rhythms : Use stops around Oxford Street, Regent Street and Covent Garden for souvenir runs: British tea, chocolate, bookshops and high‑street fashion. Londoners pack the Tube at rush hour, so strolling these districts while buses hit traffic can be your efficient choice.

Frequently asked questions about Hop-on Hop-off tour London

  • Most London Hop-on Hop-off passes activate when your ticket is first scanned on board and then run for the selected duration, such as 24-hour or 48-hour. Some 1-day tickets follow calendar dates and expire at the end of the day.

  • Yes, you can usually board at any official stop on your chosen operator’s route, not just a “Stop 1”. Because different companies use different stops, always match the bus branding and check your ticket or map before boarding.

  • On most routes, buses run roughly every 10–20 minutes, though traffic or off-peak seasons can mean longer waits. Typical operating hours are about 9am–6pm in summer and shorter days in winter, so always confirm the current timetable.

  • Most London Hop-on Hop-off buses have low-floor entry, a ramp, and at least one wheelchair space on the lower deck, but availability can’t be guaranteed on every departure. Strollers usually need to be folded and stored downstairs while you ride.

  • Child ticket rules vary by operator, but discounted fares are typically offered for ages 5–15 years. Infants and young children often travel free when sitting on an adult’s lap; always check the exact age bands on your ticket.

  • Guide dogs and registered assistance dogs are allowed on all major London Hop-on Hop-off services. Policies for other pets differ by operator, with many only accepting small animals in secure carriers, so check your chosen company’s rules before travelling.

  • London Hop-on Hop-off tours operate from fixed stops and generally do not include hotel pick-up or drop-off. You’ll need to make your own way to the nearest stop, using the route map or app to choose a convenient starting point.

  • If you miss a bus or it is full, simply wait for the next one on the same route and show your valid ticket again. Services are frequent in London, but allow time during peak seasons or heavy traffic.

  • There are no restrooms on London Hop-on Hop-off buses, so plan to use facilities at attractions, cafés, or major stops. Most operators do not allow eating or drinking on board, so finish snacks and drinks before you board again.

  • London Hop-on Hop-off tours operate in most weather, including light rain and cold, with covered lower decks available if the top deck is wet. In bad weather, operators may close the open top or adjust services, so check updates.

Madame Tussauds was such a great experience and the wax figures are honestly impressive because they look so incredibly real. My absolute favorite part was the section dedicated to British serial killers, which is funny because I originally didn't even want to go inside. I was terrified that there would be some kind of jump scare or scary surprise waiting for me. However, a lovely member of the staff promised me that I had nothing to fear and he actually held my hand while he accompanied me through the whole exhibit. It was so kind of him and it turned the scariest part into the best part of the day. If you are a fan of superheroes, the Marvel area is also beautiful and definitely worth seeing. It is a fantastic place to visit and I highly recommend it.

February is a good time for this visit- plenty of people but no queues for any of it.! Despite the rain we managed to see everyrhing in the Tower - loved the moving walkway for the best of the Crown Jewels, and the charming little chapel high in the White Tower. Had not expected an elephant and the monkeys, but did get up close and personal with a couple of Ravens. Tower Bridge was fun. An elevator to the top deck instead of 200 steps, thankfully, and not too inimidating to stand on the glass panels watching traffic and tiny people below. Lots of information and little open wndows for pics of the local skyline. Best of all was the engine shed showing how the lower deck used to be raised by steam power. Much more fun than now when someone presses a button. Apparently having it raised totake your boat through is free - though no doubt there is lots of red tape.

The aquarium worth visit. It is bit old infrastructure and glasses are not well polished as it should be, but the species collection, the way it designed, from fresh water to salt water, from rain forest to ice, it captured our engagement. We visit as family with 4years kid.

A fantastic experience from the very beginning. Boarding was quick and organized, and the staff were very friendly. The views of the London skyline from the water are breathtaking, especially when passing the London Eye and Tower Bridge. I loved the comfort of the boat, with its spacious and clean seats. The trip was smooth, ideal for relaxing and taking spectacular photos. I recommend doing it at sunset to enjoy the colors over the river. Without a doubt, a unique and modern way to explore the city. I would definitely do it again!
