About Hobbiton

Step into the rolling green hills of the Waikato and explore Hobbiton Movie Set, the real-life filming location that brought the Shire to life in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Located on the Alexander family farm near Matamata, Hobbiton features colourful Hobbit Holes, winding paths, gardens, the Mill, Party Tree, and the Green Dragon Inn.

The set was first created in 1998 after location scouts discovered the farm's natural landscape, which was largely free from modern buildings, roads, and power lines. The original set was later rebuilt permanently in 2009 for The Hobbit films, creating the detailed 12-acre attraction visitors can explore today.

Visits take place as guided tours, where you'll walk through the Shire while learning about the filming process, set design, forced perspective, and behind-the-scenes stories from your guide. Tours typically last around 2 to 2.5 hours and finish at the Green Dragon Inn, where selected experiences include a complimentary drink.

Additional information about Hobbiton

How was Hobbiton created?

Location scouts discovered the Alexander farm in 1998 for its rolling green hills and lack of modern infrastructure. Construction began in 1999, with the New Zealand Army helping build 39 temporary Hobbit Holes across the 12-acre site. After filming, 17 façades remained, paving the way for guided tours from 2002. The set was permanently rebuilt in 2009 for The Hobbit trilogy and now features 44 Hobbit Holes, detailed gardens, pathways, buildings, and props.

Visitors taking a selfie at Bag End hobbit house, Hobbiton Movie Set, New Zealand.

How was forced perspective used?

Hobbiton uses different-sized Hobbit Hole façades and carefully scaled set elements to create the illusion that characters are different sizes. This filmmaking technique helped establish the visual contrast between Hobbits and other Middle-earth characters.

View from Hobbiton house window overlooking lush green hills in New Zealand.

Which films were filmed at Hobbiton?

Hobbiton was created for The Lord of the Rings trilogy and later rebuilt for The Hobbit trilogy. The permanent set remains one of the few places where visitors can experience the Shire as a real-world movie location.

Panoramic view of Hobbiton movie set with lush green hills and iconic round door.

Is Hobbiton still a working movie set?

Today, Hobbiton operates as a permanent visitor attraction on the Alexander family farm. The set is maintained with its gardens, buildings, pathways, and other details so visitors can experience the Shire as it appeared on screen.
