Pro tips to help you make a pick

Choose Standard Admission for full pace freedom; it is the basic self-guided zoo entry and fits most visits.

Choose a Family Ticket if your household qualifies, since it changes the price rather than the route or access areas.

Book an Open Guided Tour if you want structure in a large zoo; it is a shared 90-minute tour in German.

Open Guided Tours do not include zoo entry, so you also need a valid admission ticket or annual pass.

Open Guided Tours are capped at 20 participants and generally need to be booked up to 3 working days ahead.

Choose a Private Guided Tour when your group wants its own guide-led format and advance planning matters more than free pacing.

Pick the Night Tour only if all participants are at least 16 and comfortable with a German-only, after-dark guided format.

Do not choose a product for "skip-the-line" access alone, because no distinct zoo-operated fast-track lane is part of the stated entry setup.

About Hellabrunn Zoo

Hellabrunn's defining structure is geographic: visitors move through zones such as Asia, World of Monkeys, Africa, Polar World, Bird World, and family areas instead of following a compact checklist layout. The site covers about 40 hectares and houses about 500 species, so the visit combines animal viewing, landscaped park space, and route planning across a large open-air setting.

Did you know?

There are two public entrances: Isar Entrance and Flamingo Entrance.

The zoo recorded 1,897,268 visitors in 2024.

It is open 365 days a year, with daily closing times changing seasonally.

Zoo rules state that a ticket does not guarantee access to all areas or animal houses on a given day.

One dog per visitor is allowed on a short leash, but dogs cannot enter animal houses or playgrounds.

Why visit Hellabrunn Zoo?

Follow the world's first geo-zoo layout

Hellabrunn presents itself as the world's first geo-zoo. Since 1928, animals have been arranged geographically by continent, so the visit is shaped by regional zones rather than a generic enclosure sequence.

Spend time in a large riverside zoo landscape

The zoo sits in Munich's Isar floodplain conservation area and covers about 40 hectares. That setting makes the visit feel more like a long outdoor park day with animal viewing built into it.

See the historic Elephant House

The Elephant House is both a major animal stop and a surviving early building linked to architect Emanuel von Seidl. It connects the zoo's present-day visit to its early 20th-century history.

Move through major zones with different viewing styles

Asia, World of Monkeys, Africa, Polar World, and Bird World create distinct parts of the route. Together they give the zoo a varied rhythm, from marquee animal areas to quieter observational sections.

Use it as a full family day rather than a quick stop

Playgrounds, rest areas, dining points, and baby-changing facilities are built into the grounds. Many families spend 4 to 6 hours once play breaks, meals, and slower animal viewing are part of the day.

Plan your visit

Isar Entrance

Near Thalkirchen (Tierpark) on U3 and the P1 car park on Tierparkstrasse. This is the more natural entrance for many visitors arriving from central Munich by U-Bahn. Tickets can be purchased and validated at the service center, and disabled parking is available nearby.

Flamingo Entrance

Near the Tierpark (Alemannenstrasse) stop on MetroBus 52 and the P2 car park on the Siebenbrunner Strasse/Alemannenstrasse side. Tickets can be purchased and validated at the service center. Disabled parking is available, and the Flamingo service center has limited Tuesday and Wednesday opening outside Bavarian school and public holidays.
