Across the Golden Horn from the old city rises Galata, the hill the Byzantines called the other side. The Genoese walled it and crowned it with a tower; bankers, embassies and theaters followed, and fire kept clearing the ground for them.
Start on the two-deck Galata Bridge, walk the old bankers' street to a bank with two faces, climb the Camondo Stairs to Galata Tower and go up past the gate of the city's oldest Mevlevi lodge. Then follow Istiklal Avenue along the ridge: a palace behind its forecourt, a church rebuilt for a tram line, the school gate where the great fire of 1870 stopped, the Flower Passage and a mosque older than the street. End at Taksim's stone water house.
Eleven stops, about 2.4 km and 90 minutes, in English and at your own pace. Uphill at first, with stairs. Entry to Galata Tower and the Mevlevi Lodge is not included.
